Nighthawks still navigating region playoffs after thrillers
North Branch 2, Ramsey 1 (10 innings)
In a performance reminiscent of another famous Minnesota pitcher, Jimmy Skroch threw 10 innings to lead the North Branch Nighthawks to a 2-1 win over the Ramsey Renegades in the opening round of the double-elimination Region 1C playoffs.  Noah Wolfe doubled in the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning and Skroch shut down the Renegades in the bottom of the inning to seal the win.  The game was played Saturday, August 3 at Hinckley.  The win sent the Nighthawks on to face the Mora Mustangs in the second round.  The loss dropped Ramsey into the loser’s bracket, where they lost 19-8 to East Bethel and were eliminated from the playoffs.

Bulldogs season ends with back-to-back shutouts in playoffs
North Branch 3, Chisago Lakes 0
Last season, the Chisago Lakes Bulldogs has a rough regular season, but caught fire in the playoffs and came within one game of making it to the state tournament.  This summer, they also had a rough regular season (5-14).  But North Branch Nighthawk pitcher Jimmy Skroch put out the fire before it could even get started by throwing a no-hitter to lead the Nighthawks to a 3-0 win over the Bulldogs in the opening game of the 2019 Eastern Minny League South playoffs last Thursday, July 25.  Even though the Nighthawks were the home team because they were higher seeded, the game was played at Chisago Lakes since it was a night game and the North Branch field doesn’t have lights.

Bulldogs and Nighthawks square up in early season twin bill
So, you’ve heard of the Little Brown Jug?  Paul Bunyan’s Axe?  Well, starting this year, the North Branch Nighthawks and the Chisago Lakes Bulldogs will play an annual game for their own rivalry trophy:  the Pizza Pub Mug.  The “Mug” is the brainchild of Nighthawks coach Jim Skroch.  Since the relatively new town ball teams – this is the third year  for the Nighthawks and the fifth year for the reincarnated Bulldogs – are natural rivals who play each other twice a year as members of the Eastern Minny League, management for both teams agreed to do something special to encourage that rivalry.  Last season, the teams played a doubleheader at Chisago Lakes, with a picnic in between games.  This year, the teams played a doubleheader at North Branch, with a picnic between games along with the first year of the awarding of the Mug.  In future years, the Mug game will switch sites, with next year’s game taking place at Chisago Lakes during Karl Oskar Days.  The teams will also play a regular (non-Mug) game at North Branch during Midsummer Days.  In 2021, the site of the Mug game will be at North Branch during Midsummer Days, and so on.

CL can't get the timely hit, fall 3-1 to Cloquet and will have to win two
Section 7AAA Playoffs
The second-seeded Wildcats have had an exciting run in the Section 7AAA playoffs so far.  They opened with a win over Princeton in extra innings, came from behind in the bottom of the seventh to beat Hermantown, lost a tough one to top-seeded Cloquet and showed some offense in a shutout of Grand Rapids.  Tonight, the 3-1 Wildcats will take on 3-0 Cloquet for the section championship at Chisago Lakes High School at 3:30 p.m.  Since Cloquet is undefeated at this point in the double elimination tournament, the Wildcat will have to beat Cloquet twice in a row today to win the section.  Wildcat head coach Brenda Carlson said “The number one and number two seed facing off is what you want.  We are pretty well matched.  It all comes down to who makes plays, who doesn’t make plays and who gets the big hit.  We are looking forward to it.”

CL baseball wins three straight
Timing is everything  The Wildcat baseball team had a 5-9 record just over a week ago, seemingly scuffling toward the end of a tough season.  But, despite some questionable defensive play, they have caught fire since then, winning five in a row starting with last week’s win over North Branch.  With the section playoffs looming,  they seem to have put it all together and are hopefully poised for a long run in the postseason.
