'Cats hit bump in road but still cruise to M8C championship

Anna Zaruba had a run scoring double in each of the first three innings to lead the Wildcats to a 12-6 win over the Cambridge-Isanti Bluejackets Tuesday, May 10 at Chisago Lakes High School. The Wildcats scored four runs in each of those first three innings and pounded out 13 hits in the game. In four plate appearances, Ashley Mandell got two hits, walked twice, drove in two runs, and scored three. The six runs allowed by the Wildcats were just one fewer than the seven runs they had allowed in the season’s first 12 games.

Reed Marquardt pitched 6 2/3 innings of shutout baseball and Joe Graeve and Collin Hackl drove in two runs each to lead the Wildcats to a 7-0 win over the Cambridge-Isanti Bluejackets Tuesday, May 10 at Chisago Lakes High School. Marquardt was dominant, allowing just two hits. He walked two and struck out 12.

The Wildcats track team enjoyed their trip to Pine City for the ten-team Chengwatana Invite last Saturday, as both the girls and boys won their team competitions. The girls squeaked by the hosts, Pine City, 162.5 to 161. The boys had a more comfortable margin over Pine City, winning 149.5 to 120.

Cole Hentges started and went four innings for the Wildcats. He allowed two earned runs on four hits, walked four and struck out four. Collin Hackl picked up the win in three innings of relief. Wildcat senior Myia Teeselink won the 185-pound class at the first-ever MSHSL Girl’s State Wrestling Tournament, pinning sophomore Chae Nay Htoo of St. Paul Humboldt-Open World Learning at 3:29 to claim the crown. Teeselink is the Wildcats’ first state champion since Dan Dellwo won the 140-pound class at the boys’ tournament in 1995. This year’s girls’ tournament was held alongside the boy’s tournament last weekend at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

Brandt Bombard (160) beat Travis Smith of Simley 8-3 in the championship match. And Ashton LaBelle (170) beat Brent Holzem of Simley 4-3 to earn his trip to state. Bombard will face Carver Roman of FMCW in the morning session on Friday. And LaBelle will take on Cooper Hendrickson of Hibbing in his opening match.

The third-seeded Wildcats took care of business against the sixth-seeded St. Paul Academy Spartans, beating them 3-1 in the quarterfinals of the Section 4A playoffs last Friday, February 25 at Chisago Lakes Arena. The win sent the Wildcats to last night’s semifinal matchup against the Simley Spartans at Roseville Ice Arena. Results of that game were not available in time for publication. The winner of that game will go on to play the winner of last night’s game between the top-seeded Mahtomedi Zephyrs and the fifth-seeded Two Rivers Warriors in tomorrow night’s section championship game at 7 p.m. at Roseville Ice Arena.

The fourth-seeded Wildcats never really got their prolific offense in gear all night in the section championship game against the second-seeded South St. Paul Packers. But they were still in the game until the Packers scored a shorthanded goal with four-and-a-half minutes to go in the third period to make the score 4-2. South St. Paul hung on for the 4-2 win, advancing to the state tournament and denying the Wildcats their second straight trip to the Excel Center. The game was played last Thursday, February 17 at Doug Woog Arena in South St. Paul.

The Northern Edge came out blazing In their final game of the regular season. They got on the scoreboard first against the Osseo Orioles and outshot the Orioles 19-1 in the first period. But Orioles goalie Jake Regan shut the door after the first goal and led his team to a 4-1 win over the Edge. The game was played Tuesday, February 15 at Osseo.

Ryan Schmidt had a goal and three assists to lead the Wildcats to a 5-0 shellacking of the St. Paul Johnson Governors Tuesday, February 15 at Phalen Arena in St. Paul. The Wildcats dominated the wide-open game from start to finish, outshooting the Governors 57-23 for the game. Wildcat goalie Zach Carlson stopped all 23 shots he faced to earn the second shutout of his 6-0 senior season.
