North Branch's Weyenberg and Minke have great debuts at state tourney
Olivia Weyenberg was a bit of a surprise entrant into the state tournament, but she more than held her own when the best of the Class AA girls gathered on June 14-15 at The Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan.

Chisago Lakes storms state tournament for third place
State Tournament
In their first state tournament appearance in school history, the Wildcat softball team came in third place.  They opened with a 6-1 win over the Benilde-St. Margaret’s Red Knights, lost 4-0 to the Winona WInhawks in the semifinals and finished with an 8-2 win over the Simley Spartans in the third-place game.  The games were played at the impressive Caswell Park softball complex in North Mankato last Thursday and Friday.

'Cats fall just short of state

If Chisago Lakes was nervous in their section semifinals match up against Spring Lake Park/Coon Rapids to start, the nerves quickly vanished in the second quarter as the ‘Cats piled on the Panthers in what ended up being a 16-5 victory on Tuesday, June 7.

Wildcat baseball season ends in championship game
Grand Rapids 9, Chisago Lakes 2
The Wildcats had a tall task heading into the Section 7AAA championship game against the top-seeded Grand Rapids Thunderhawks at Hermantown last Wednesday, June 8, having used up their top pitching to get there through the elimination bracket.  The Thunderhawks took an early 3-0 lead and put the game out for reach with a three-run sixth inning, beating the Wildcats 9-2.  The loss ended the season for the Wildcats and sent the Thunderhawks to the state tournament for the second straight season.

The addition of a third class in track and field left North Branch and Chisago Lakes as a couple bigger schools in Class AA after routinely being some of the smaller schools in the previos two-class system.

Chisago Lakes battles through losers bracket to get back to section championship games
The Wildcat baseball team went 4-1 in the Section 7AAA tournament over the past week, earning the right to face Grand Rapids at Hermantown for the section championship.  The game or games against Grand Rapids were played yesterday, too late for inclusion in this week’s Press.

After breezing through Hermantown in their opening round of sections, the fifth seeded Chisago Lakes girls lacrosse team had to travel out west to take on the fourth seeded Champlin Park Rebels on Thursday, June 2.

In the final conference matchup, the Chisago Lakes boys lacrosse team won huge over Big Lake to defend their Greater West Metro conference championship 23-0.

Chisago Lakes crowned conference champs in Greater West Metro
Chisago Lakes 15, Becker 5
Sara Smith scored four goals and had five points, and Skylar Wells, Aly Vogelsang, Kamryn Peterson and Kaianna Senne all scored two goals to help the Wildcats rout the Becker Bulldogs  Tuesday, May 24, claiming their first-ever Greater West Metro Conference title in the process.

'Cats claw their way to first state tourney berth

The Wildcat girls’ softball team is headed to the state tournament for the first time in Chisago Lakes High School history.  They beat the Hermantown Hawks 4-3 in the Section 7AAA championship game Thursday, June 2 to punch their ticket to state.  Junior Ashley Mandell pitched a complete game to pick up the win.  The game was played at Forest Lake High School.

The Wildcat boys lacrosse team had a busy week with three games played in four days. Chisago Lakes started their week with a road trip to Sartell/Sauk Rapids to take on the Storm'n Sabres and then two home games against Buffalo and Rocori.

Golfers wrapping up regular season slate
North Branch and Chisago Lakes finished up their regular season schedule this week with back-to-back meets at Princeton Golf Course and Chisago Lakes Golf Course, but before that they got a nice section preview at the Grand Invitational at Hinckley Grand National on Friday, May 20.

The Chisago Lakes girls lacrosse team beat Becker 15-5 on Tuesday, May 24, officially wrapping up the Greater West Metro Conference championship with an undefeated 6-0 record so far. Skylar Wells (above) had two goals in the big win, and Sara Smith had four scores. For a full recap, check out next week’s Press.

Stipe wins pole vault at Twilight meet

In their final meet before today’s conference championship, the Wildcat track team participated in the Monticello Twilight Meet Tuesday, May 17 at Monticello.  The meet was somewhat of a preview of today’s Mississippi 8 Conference meet, as all six teams in today’s meet are in the Mississippi 8 Conference – the Wildcats, Becker, Big Lake, Monticello, Princeton, and St. Francis – are in the M8C.

'Cats lose top seed on Hawk walkoff

A one-out walkoff single by Avery Farrell in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted the Hermantown Hawks to a 5-4 win over the Wildcats in the first game of a doubleheader last Friday, May 20 at Rose Road Field in Hermantown.  The loss was a big part of the reason unranked Hermantown was given the number-one seed in the Section 7AAA tournament over the third-ranked Wildcats.

'Cats hit bump in road but still cruise to M8C championship

Anna Zaruba had a run scoring double in each of the first three innings to lead the Wildcats to a 12-6 win over the Cambridge-Isanti Bluejackets Tuesday, May 10 at Chisago Lakes High School.  The Wildcats scored four runs in each of those first three innings and pounded out 13 hits in the game.  In four plate appearances, Ashley Mandell got two hits, walked twice, drove in two runs, and scored three.  The six runs allowed by the Wildcats were just one fewer than the seven runs they had allowed in the season’s first 12 games.

Reed Marquardt pitched 6 2/3 innings of shutout baseball and Joe Graeve and Collin Hackl drove in two runs each to lead the Wildcats to a 7-0 win over the Cambridge-Isanti Bluejackets Tuesday, May 10 at Chisago Lakes High School.  Marquardt was dominant, allowing just two hits.  He walked two and struck out 12.

Riding a four game winning streak, North Branch was locked in a pitcher’s duel with the Monticello Magic on Tuesday, May 10 before a massive sixth inning from Monti blew the game open and ended NB’s hot run.

Despite not playing in the same conference, Chisago Lakes and Forest Lake have a nice, friendly rivalry in tennis, and it’s been a while since the Wildcats got the best of the Rangers, but they nabbed them on Saturday, May 14 in a tournament.

The Wildcats track team enjoyed their trip to Pine City for the ten-team Chengwatana Invite last Saturday, as both the girls and boys won their team competitions.  The girls squeaked by the hosts, Pine City, 162.5 to 161.  The boys had a more comfortable margin over Pine City, winning 149.5 to 120.

North Branch put up crooked numbers in the first, third and sixth inning en route to a 10-2 win over the Becker Bulldogs on Tuesday, May 3.
Reed Jacobsen, Andrew Orf. Isaiah Scarborough and Nate Skiba all had big offensive games to pace the Vikings, and Orf shut down the Bulldogs from the mound to get NB back on track after losing five of their last six.

Vikings' lone win last week comes against Princeton

North Branch broke their two game losing skid with a nice win over Mississippi 8 Conference opponent Princeton on Tuesday, April 26.
The Vikings got a strong start and two hits from Andrew Orf, and Noah Thorsen also starred at the plate and pitched an inning clean ball to finish off the Tigers.

Anna Zaruba pitched a one-hitter and Ashley Mandell hit her first career home run as the Wildcats crushed the Cambridge-Isanti Bluejackets 11-0 in  game shortened to five innings because of the ten-run rule.

Schedule getting tough for CL

The Wildcats scored four runs with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to break open a close game and went on to beat the Monticello Magic 8-3 in the first game of a doubleheader Tuesday, April 26 at Chisago Lakes High School.  Cole Hentges started and went four innings for the Wildcats.  He allowed two earned runs on four hits, walked four and struck out four.  Collin Hackl picked up the win in three innings of relief.  He allowed one earned run on one hit, walked three and struck out two.
