Area soccer teams wrap up regular season, postseason awaits
Chisago Lakes Girls
In what was to be their final regular season game, the Wildcats (14-0-1) didn't exactly know what to expect from the 22nd-ranked Minnehaha Academy Redhawks (7-3-3) coming into the match at Chisago Lakes High School on Thursday, October 3. The Redhawks had tied fifth-ranked Breck and lost to 20th-ranked Blake by just one goal.  But the Wildcats were on point from the start.  Nine minutes into the match, Riann Daas found Estefani Hanson, who shot the ball into the lower corner for the first Wildcat goal.  Midway through the half, Allison Glenna found Daas for the Wildcats' second goal.  And with eight minutes left in the half, Madison Kubalek sent a one-touch pass to Daas for the Wildcats' third goal and a 3-0 halftime lead.  Early in the second half, Minnehaha Academy scored to make it 3-1.  The score stayed that way until the 81st minute, when Kellie Higgins sent a corner in to the box and Avery Constant blasted it home to give the Wildcats a more comfortable cushion at 4-1.  Daas – who finished with two goals and two assists –  sent a beautiful feed across the box to a wide-open Rayna Barrett for the finish.  Finally, Hanson dropped a ball back to Kellie Higgins, who bent it in for a goal to make the final score Chisago Lakes 6, Minnehaha Academy 1.

Wildcats squeeze by Vikes
Chisago Lakes Wildcat senior Jamie Mower scored the only goal of the game 15 minutes into the first half, and the Wildcats managed to make it hold up against a determined North Branch Viking team for a 1-0 win.  The game was played last Thursday, September 26 at North Branch High School.
Mower’s goal came as part of a give and go with Braydon Byrds down the middle of the field.  Mower ended up with a breakaway and shot the ball into the lower right-hand corner of the net to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.  The Vikings controlled play much of the rest of the half, but the Wildcats had the best scoring opportunities.  In the 29th minute, the Wildcats played a high through ball that looked like it would result in a breakaway.  But 6’6” Viking defender Mason Maroschek leaped into the air and headed it back down the field the other way to thwart that opportunity.  The Wildcats also hit the crossbar with about five minutes to go in the half.

Chisago Lakes can't stop Bison offensive stampede
The Wildcat football team had executed its game plan while facing the prolific offense of the Buffalo Bison and, despite numerous turnovers and critical penalties, found itself in position to win the game late in the fourth quarter last Friday night.  With the Wildcats trailing 26-20, an electrifying 52-yard run by fullback Sailor Olson gave the Wildcats a first down on the Bison 10-yard line with just over two minutes to go in the game.  The Wildcats were poised to take the lead and leave little or no time for the Bison to come back.  But Olson fumbled on the next play, and the Bison recovered and ran out the clock for a 26-20 win.  The Wildcat players and the large crowd of fans at Chisago Lakes High School went home disappointed.  And it may not be much consolation after a tough loss, but the crowd did get to see a great high school football game.

Vikings still battling to create consistent offense
Princeton 3, North Branch 0
“It just wasn’t a good night,” said Viking girls’ soccer head coach Josh Kopp after the Vikings lost 3-0 to the Princeton Tigers at home Tuesday, September 10.  “We beat Princeton last year.  Maybe our players were distracted by all of the things going on at school.  Maybe we didn’t have enough respect for them.  Whatever the reason, we were not prepared to play a team we should have had a better result against.  We gave up some weak goals, weren’t executing in the attacking third of the field and ended up paying for it.”
