| Wildcats put the hurt on North Branch in county dual |
 |
Chisago Lakes 66, North Branch 18 Not too many years ago, the annual dual meet between the Chisago Lakes Wildcats and the North Branch Vikings was a must-see event. But both programs declined, for a variety of reasons. And both programs are now on the rebound, but the Wildcats are farther along in their resurgence. So, last week’s dual meet between the two squads at Chisago Lakes High School was anticlimactic. And all 14 matches were either pins or forfeits, with seven of the nine pins coming in the first period. After Wildcat Brannick Malchow (106) beat Viking Mason Henry to open the dual, the Vikings took a brief lead at 12-6 when Jack Baker (113) beat Wildcat Taden Morley and Ethan Kester (120) beat Sam Bird. But the Wildcats dominated after that, winning at ten of the final eleven weights. The most highly anticipated match of the evening came at 145 between two of the best wrestlers in the building, Wildcat Andrew Novack and Viking Michael Thao. According to Viking head coach Kyle Kahl, Thao didn’t wrestle his best match. And Novack was on top of his game, pinning Thao with one second left in the first period. Friday, January 13, 2023
