Over the weekend, the Chisago Wildcat dance team competed at the Mississippi 8 Conference Championship meet and the varsity Jazz team took first place, which resulted in them winning a share of the M8C championship!

'Cats claw past Northern Edge

In the first of two meetings this year, Wildcat Ashton Edson scored at 12:48 of the third period to break a 1-1 tie with the Stars.  The Wildcats added two more goals for a final score of 4-1.  The Wildcats outshot the Stars 25-21 for the game, and both Wildcat goalie Jack Hanson and Stars goalie Jake Kolb made some nice saves to keep their teams in the game.

Wildcats finish strong in meets
South St. Paul Triangular
As anticipated, Andrew Novack (138) reached the 100-career victory milestone during the triangular at South St. Paul last Wednesday, January 12.  He pinned Mahtomedi’s Alex Lavalle at 1:08 for his 99th win, and pinned Caelan Stroud of South St. Paul ten seconds quicker to claim win number 100.  The Wildcats split the triangular, beating Mahtomedi 48-27 and losing to South St. Paul 61-18.  Owen Morley (126), Reed Bleymeyer (160), Myia Teeselink (170), Logan Bender (195) and Chuck Gilman (220) all won by fall against their Mahtomedi opponents.  Hayden Trupe (152) and Bender both pinned their South St. Paul opponents.

Northern Edge rebounds for win

The Stars played well against the conference-leading Cambridge-Isanti Bluejackets, but the Bluejackets prevailed 3-2 Wednesday, January 12 at East Bethel Ice Arena.  The Bluejackets outshot the Stars 27-22 for the game.

CL boys defeat Monticello

With the Wildcats and Monticello Moose tied 1-1 midway through the second period, Nick Helland scored a shorthanded goal to put the Wildcats up 2-1.  He added an insurance goal late in the third period to give the Wildcats a 3-1 win over the Moose.  The game was played Friday, January 14 at Chisago Lakes Arena.  Monticello outshot the Wildcats 28-18 for the game, and Wildcat goalie Jack Hanson was up to the task, stopping 27 of the 28 shots he faced.

'Cats still up and down in 2022
South St. Paul 7, Chisago Lakes 1
On paper, the girls’ hockey game between the Wildcats and the South St. Paul Packers should have been close.  But – cliché alert – games aren’t played on paper.  The Wildcats took ten penalties in the game to just three for the Packers, so the Wildcats spend a good chunk of the game trying to kill penalties, which tends to tire out ta team.  They were only partially successful, giving up three power play goals on nine penalty kill attempts, and lost 7-1.  The game was played Saturday, January 8 at Doug Woog Arena in South St. Paul.

Viking wrestlers host triangular
Three of the Vikings’ top four wrestlers – the four wrestlers who were likely to make it to the state tournament and had a great chance to place – are injured, with one or two f them out for the season.  Only Ashton LaBelle (170) – currently ranked sixth in Class AA at 170 pounds –  is healthy.  “Ashton is having a great season,” said Viking assistant coach Kyle Kahl.  “He has managed to stay healthy and really wrestling well.”  Due to those injuries, other injured wrestlers and wrestlers affected by COVID issues, only two wrestlers were available for the last Saturday’s Mounds View Invitational, forcing the Vikings to withdraw.

Wildcats earn much needed dual win against North Branch

There weren’t really any competitive matches when the Wildcats and Vikings clashed last Thursday, January 6 at North Branch High School.  All the Viking points came from forfeits, including wins by Brandt Bombard (160) and Ashton LaBelle (170), the Vikings’ top wrestlers.  Just two Wildcats wins came from forfeits.  There were five pins among the eight Wildcat non-forfeit wins, including pins by Andrew Novack (138), Brycen Morley (152), Reed Bleymeyer (160), Logan Bender (220) and Chuck Gilman (285).  During the 120-pound match between Wildcat Riley Palmer and Viking Evan Pommier, Pommier was injured, and Palmer was awarded the win as injury time expired.

Even though this upcoming week may be the most important of the season thus far for the North Branch boys basketball team, it doesn’t mean last week’s 2-0 sweep wasn’t impressive over Big Lake and Grand Rapids.

The Monticello Magic are by far the most talented team in the Mississippi 8 Conference in swimming and diving, and they showed it in a drubbing of Chisago Lakes that saw them swim the last four events in exhibition.

Chisago Lakes had some of their best scores of the year last week in gymnastics, but it didn’t do them much good in the win-loss column as they were competing against the third ranked team in the state in Big Lake in one meet, and competing at the Big Lake Invitational in the other.

The Wildcats brought five varsity wrestlers to the ten-team Mora Invitational last Saturday at Mora High School.  Andrew Novack (132) and Logan Bender (195) each placed second in their weight classes.  The Wildcats finished eighth as a team.

Stars win three of four
Princeton 2, Northern Edge 1
Having lost to the Stars 6-3 just eight days earlier, the Princeton Tigers turned the tables and beat the Stars 2-1 Thursday, January 6 at Princeton Ice Arena.  The Tigers scored twice in the first period.  They held the Stars off the scoreboard until just 43 seconds remained in the game, when Ben Baumgardt scored an unassisted goal to cut the Princeton lead to 2-1.  But the Tigers killed off the remaining seconds to seal the win.  Shots were nearly even, with Princeton having a 23-22 edge.

Chisago loses two close games

When the Wildcats and Forest Lake Rangers clashed at Forest Lake Sports Center on Tuesday, December 28, Wildcat Ryan Schmidt scored a power play goal at 2:51 of the third period to pull the Wildcats within one goal.  But the Rangers held off the Wildcats for the rest of the period and came away with a 3-2 win.  The Rangers outshot the Wildcats 30-21 for the game.

After not playing in a competitive game since before Christmas, the North Branch girls basketball team came out on fire against Little Fall’s 1-3-1 defense on Tuesday, January 4
“They tried to force us to shoot from the outside a little more than we normally do, but we capitalized on that,” Head Coach Alison Trampe said.

Burgen breaks assist mark during 13-0 demolition of Red Wing

The Wildcats scored five goals in the first period and five more in the second period on their way to a 13-0 thrashing of the Red Wing Wingers Thursday, December 30 at Chisago Lakes Arena.  Dani Brunette led the Wildcats in scoring with two goals and four assists.  The Wildcats dominated their overmatched opponent from start to finish, outshooting them 43-8.  Wildcat goalie Brianna Ritter stopped all eight shots she faced to pick up her third shutout of the season.

Trevor Ripley and Loghan Croal scored two goals apiece to lead the Stars to a 6-3 win over the Princeton Tigers, Wednesday, December 29 at the National Sports Center in Blaine.  The win gave the Stars fifth place in the Herb Brooks Holiday Classic, Silver level.

'Cats conquer Hilltoppers
Chisago Lakes 6, Duluth Marshall 3
Tied 2-2 with Duluth Marshall after two periods, the Wildcats exploded for three goals in the first two minutes of the third period and went on to beat the Hilltoppers 6-3 Tuesday, December 21 at Chisago Lakes Arena.  The Wildcats outshot the Hilltoppers 47-36 for the game.  Wildcat goalie Zach Carlson, making just his second start of the season, stopped 33 of the 36 shots he faced to pick up the win.

Northern Edge breaks losing streak behind Langevin hat trick

The Rangers scored twice in each of the first two periods and shut out the Stars 4-0 Thursday, December 23 at the East Bethel Ice Arena.  The Rangers dominated play through the game, outshooting the Vikings 30-18 for the game, including a 17-3 edge in the second period.  The Stars comeback attempt in the third period fizzled, as the Rangers held them to just five shots on net for the period.

Chisago Lakes in some barnburners, but lose first game

Ryan Schmidt scored with 47 seconds left in the game, assisted by Ben Jinks, to give the Wildcats a 2-1 win over the Pine City Dragons Tuesday, December 14 at the Pine City Civic Center.  Nik Jinks had scored early in the first period, with an assist going to Ashton Edson, to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.  That lead held up until the Dragons tied it up with 3:47 left in the game.  But exactly three minutes later, when the game appeared headed for overtime, Schmidt’s goal won it for the Wildcats.  Pine City outshot the Wildcats 30-28 for the game.  Wildcat goalie Jack Hanson stopped 29 of the 30 shots he faced to pick up the win.

The Wildcat girls basketball team had one of the more impressive defensive stretches you’ll see when they opened their Mississippi 8 Conference schedule against St. Francis last week, immediately after playing a non-conference game against Sauk Rapids-Rice.

'Cats top Breck again, but fall to Gentry

Cara Sajevic of Gentry Academy had hat tricks in both the first and third periods, and the Stars crushed the Wildcats 13-5 Tuesday, December 14 at the TRIA rink in St. Paul.  The Stars, ranked sixth in Class AA, outshot the Wildcats 39-22 for the game and scored seven goals on just 12 shots in the third period.   Some of the intensity from last year’s state tournament semifinal matchup seemed to have spilled over into this game, as the teams combined for 17 penalties, including two double minors for roughing on each team midway through the first period.

Stars lose to Pine City
The outcome of the Stars’ game against the Pine City Dragons boiled down to just 27 seconds.  The Dragons scored two goals just 16 seconds apart in the first period.  They were even quicker in the third period, scoring twice just eleven second apart, and ended up beating the Stars 5-1.  Alex Langevin scored the only goal for the Stars, assisted by Aaron Smith, midway through the second period.  The Dragons outshot the Stars 29-22 for the game.

North Branch had a great start going into the season, sporting a 4-1 record after topping Rush City Tuesday, December 14, but back-to-back blowout losses to very tough teams from Monticello and Grand Rapids has shown the Vikings they have some work to do to make noise once the postseason rolls around.

Three Viking wrestlers accounted for the 12 Viking points in their 64-12 dual meet loss to the Bulldogs at Becker High School Thursday, December 16.  Evan Pommier (113) pinned Nolan Jurek at 3:26.  Brandt Bombard (160) squeaked by Mason Doucette 8-7.  And Ashton LaBelle (170) decisioned Adam Jurek 10-5.

Tyler Iacono had a hat trick, Isaiah Scarborough had two goals and two assists and playmaker Ben Baumgardt contributed three assists to lead the Stars to an 8-2 win over the Becker/Big Lake Eagles.  The Stars dominated the game from start to finish, outshooting the Eagles 35-15 for the game.  The game was played Tuesday, December 7 at Princeton Ice Arena.

Wildcats' offense firing; run into tough Blaine team

Dani Brunette picked up a Gordie Howe hat trick – a goal, an assist, and a fight (well, a roughing penalty, at least) – to lead the Wildcats to a 5-0 shutout of the Northern Tier Stars Tuesday, December 7 at Chisago Lakes Arena.  The Wildcats outshot the Stars 34-25 for the game, and Wildcat goalie Brianna Ritter stopped all 25 shots she faced to earn her first career shutout.
