“How lovely to think that no one need wait a moment, we can start now, start slowly changing the world.”
- Anne Frank
Igniting positive change locally and globally through purpose focused giving – this is the legacy Riley Hoheisel is creating through the Trevor Hoheisel Memorial Scholarship, in memory of his son.
Founded in 1998, the Trevor Hoheisel Memorial Scholarship has contributed towards advancing future leaders through scholarships awarded to graduating seniors of Braham High School and Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted High School, as well as making a positive global impact by partnering with the Chisago Lakes Area Rotary to support building freshwater wells in Gambia, Africa and sending medical staff and supplies to Central America.
2019 marked the year for the Memorial Scholarship to impact early childhood education; specifically, early literacy through a donation of $1000 to the Chisago Lakes Early Literacy Project.
As a retired Superintendent, Riley personally knows how critically important reading is for young children as it creates a strong foundation for their future success. “This community wide early literacy initiative is absolutely on target focusing on children aged 0-5; our most important future asset,” says Riley. “We are so fortunate to have visionaries like this in our community and it’s why I am so proud of the Chisago Lakes Community!”
The $1,000 donation will support efforts building collaborative, cross community initiatives improving participation in early literacy resources across the Chisago Lakes Area.
The Chisago Lakes Early Literacy Project was founded in August 2018 by Chisago Lakes community member Tanya Paine based on a desire to bring together organizations and individuals in the area to focus on elevating early childhood literacy. The project was quickly brought to life through community leaders and organizations passionate about early literacy including Carmen Woeltge, Family Services and Education Director of Chisago Lakes School District; Katie Malchow, Director of Chisago Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce and representative of Usborne Books & More, as well as support from East Central Regional Library. Leaders contributed their knowledge, experience and resources to build on the project’s mission to connect caregivers with early literacy resources, professionals, and events to empower families to better prepare young children to read and love to learn.
