North Branch and Chisago Lakes robotic team finishes high in local competition
North Branch Middle School was hosting 56 teams participating in the High Tech Kids Robotics Qualifying Tournament December 14-15. North Branch had three teams competing and Chisago Lakes had two.
Saturday, North Branch Team 7288 finished qualifying with a 3-2 record and advanced to the elimination rounds where they were lost out in a 2/3 match semi final contest. Chisago Lakes Team 11412 and 11413 finished with identical 3-2 records, but were not selected for the elimination rounds.
Sunday, North Branch Team 8636 finished second overall after the qualification rounds with a 4-1 record. In the third match of the day, when partnered with a team from Edina, they won with a score of 110 points which was the highest total in Minnesota so far this season. Team 8636, FIRE, invited two other teams to join them in the elimination rounds but lost 2/3 in the semi finals and their day ended. Team 8637 had two wins and three losses on the day and did not advance.
This marks the last competition for Mentor Scott Frischmon from Chisago Lakes. He has been involved in robotics and helped form the Chisago Lakes - North Branch High School Team 3038, along with Becky Leuer, in the Fall of 2008. Both North Branch and Chisago Lakes, with the help of mentors Leuer and Frischmon, added FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) Teams for middle school students to provide a feeder program for the high school team.
Frischmon said, "It was a great run and we were able to give kids a quality experience that will benefit them in the future." While Frischmon will no longer be a mentor, he said he would continue to follow the program and found his involvement in the program at both levels very rewarding. Jenel Korkowski from North Branch is the current Team Leader for 3038. Leuer continues leading the North Branch FTC teams.
