North Branch adopts teacher contract to '23, ups substitute pay

North Branch Area School District #138 reached out to recruit community members last year to help with sudden covid-created staffing vacancies, and this year is no different.  As the virus impact stretches on and on, the staffing pool of non-permanent workers is being drained.  In response to the workforce competition North Branch School Board last week upped the compensation  to entice substitute teachers.  Substitutes will get $145 per full day and $72.50 for a half day, with incentive pay for multiple days worked and at the end of the school year a bonus.

Superintendent Sara Paul told School Board members, (minus Kevin Bollman) that the district has stressed that staff should stay home when they are sick, and keeping kids healthy calls for staff who are well.

The special pay is only for this 2021-2022 school year.

School Board member Heather Osagiede was also approved to work as a substitute for North Branch. The compensation for the year is capped by law at $8,000 for a school board director who works in the district where they hold elected office.  (Osagiede abstained from the vote on pay and on the vote approving her to be a sub.)

Oct. 27 hiring event
There also was an announcement of a one-stop event if you are interested in looking into working at North Branch facilities.
The district plans to hold two-hour sessions Wednesday, October 27 where you can get information about positions that typically have vacancies, what you need to qualify, and you can even get fingerprinting done for background checks. and apply right there.  Come from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., or 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.   or 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The event is at the District Office in the Education Building on Grand Avenue (the one with the colorful entry arches.)
Supt. Paul explained that even if a community member only has five to 10 days in the next several months, that they could be available, it can be beneficial.

NBEA settled
In a personnel related issue the School Board also settled the current two-year NBEA teacher contract.

The union ratified the agreement conditions and the Board was unanimous.  

Director of Finance and Human Resources Todd Tetzlaff reports the contract highlights are:  an increase to each cell of the salary schedule starting 2022-2023 of 2.5 percent, salary schedule increases of $2,000 for each cell in 2021-2022 except for Step 17 which goes up by $2,400 and ECFE teachers wage hike in line with salary schedule increase and health insurance premiums district contribution goes up $25 Jan 1, 2022 and $10 on Jan. 1, 2023.

Board Chair Tim MacMillan thanked everyone involved and said negotiations went amicably.
