NB School Board hears funding last year has unplanned bills related to COVID close to covered

The North Branch School Board had a walk through of the year-end 2021 budget last week and Finance Director Todd Tetzlaff advised the members they’d be finalizing adjustments etc. at the December Board meeting.  Figures currently depict a budget where the General Fund saw $32.3 in revenues and the district spent $30.7 million out of the General Fund.

The budget would have had an enormous gap due to extra covid-19 related expenditures—had the district not received $1.2 million covid relief funds from the federal government.  Tetzlaff noted that there was an estimate done by the Association of School Business Officials that North Branch (or similar district) would realistically be expecting $1.3 million in added expense during the pandemic.

Costs were things like providing childcare in before and after school programs to the Tier One and Tier Two essential workers. In North Branch this ran $65,905 last school year, just from November to January 2021.

There was a deficit showing in Activities for year end 2021, but there wasn’t any discussion last week regarding revising district policy on free admission considerations. The budget showed $54,000 spent and $27,000 as revenues.

For Veterans Day November 11 the district invited veterans to certain programs in person and other events were streamed on the Internet. The High School JROTC Color Guard appeared at events around the community, ie: Ecumen, Senior Center, etc.  (See photos.)

The next virtual luncheon with Superintendent Sara Paul is Wednesday, November 24 at noon.  Go to the website for  access and details www.isd138.org

And, kids are encouraging community members to donate a box of cereal.  Leave the cereal at the Education Center (with colorful arches) on Grand Avenue. They need to have them by December 1 so the domino-knock down can be held.  All the boxes are placed in a very long line in the hallway for a domino style tip-over.  Cereal ends up at Family Pathways then for the food pantries.
