NB Board gets summer school numbers and child care space update

When the voters in North Branch approved their referendum spending a few years ago they must have known something was in the air for district growth.  We reported in June the district is experiencing general overall enrollment growth for the first time in years, which is positive for funding. But it has resulted in community concern, that there aren’t enough child care outlets.

Superintendent Sara Paul told her  School Board last week she is spreading the word that the district’s child care programming has space.

Child care is provided at district facilities, that were improved using the referendum funding, for before and after school.  During the school day the district has child care for children ages 3 and up.  This summer there are 150 children participating, Paul added.

“The community’s investment...has provided the school district with state of the art spaces to accomodate families in need of child care,” said Paul.

North Branch School Board also invited spring sports coaches to last week’s meeting to brag about their athletes and season accomplishments,  and there was lots to say.  The underlying philosophy of the program, according to Activities Director Kendra Helin, is to stress having fun based on the belief athletes are students first and play sports second.  Multiple teams of both males and females achieved conference honors in academics— along with earning trips to compete at state.
The school board members, minus Heather Naegele and Kevin Bollman, also celebrated speech, adaptive bowling, one-act, knowledge bowl, AAA and ExCEL awardees in the just-completed school year.

The A.D. said extra curricular participation numbers are up from last year’s and percentages of returning athletes indicate the coaches are doing their jobs well and  holding participants’ interest.  Several coaches spoke to the Board in person and a couple submitted video comments.

** Hall of Fame inductees will be recognized for the coming school year,  on September 23 at the North Branch Homecoming Game halftime.

There was not much to report on the security or health protocols for return to school this fall.  Superintendent Sara Paul said staff is working on updating the “safe learning plan” and the Board should expect to see the fact sheet at the August 11 Board meeting.

North Branch’s Summer School has seen an increase in high school age enrollment while elementary and middle school-aged students numbers stayed pretty consistent. In total there are 238 enrolled this summer.  Supt. Paul said academic credit recovery is moving at a good pace for those students who are making up incomplete or failed courses.  Students get breakfast and lunch when participating.

It was reported the police department and district have worked out the costs and logistics allowing School Resource Officer Mike Nelson to become fulltime for the coming school year.

The newest version of the parent-student handbook is being made available on the website.  There are a few updates for 2022-2023 mainly to meet state law on attendance, to include distance learning methods,  and data privacy, the superintendent said.

Filing for school board opens Augst 2 and closes Aug.16.  Cost is $2 ad forms are at the district clerk’s office, 38705 Grand Ave. There are three four-year seats up for balloting November 2022,  and one additional seat to be filled is expiring January 2025.

In business actions the Board got a good bid for fuel from Beaudry Oil & Propane, accepting gas delivered at $3.3984 per gallon and diesel at $4.2580.
Terry’s Disposal got the district garbage hauling bid at $3,510 monthly.
