North Branch School Board organizes; hears Covid prep update for students' return
The North Branch District 138 School Board last week elected officers, set wages and meeting dates and addressed a host of other annual organizing tasks, with a new chair guiding the Board for the first time in years. (See story on Kirby Ekstrom stepping down.)

Stacy City Council makes decision on abatement
Stacy City Council met mostly in person Jan 12 for the first council meeting of the new year.  Present were Mayor-elect Mark Utecht and newly elected council member Tim Sawatzky. Phoning in were council members Jenny Carlson and Marie Lawrence. Absent was council member Tony Olivolo.

Chisago Lakes beats top-ranked Breck to set the tone for season
Chisago Lakes 3, Breck 2
The fifth-ranked Wildcat girls hockey team opened the season with a bang, as Jenna Lawry scored a hat trick to lead the Wildcats to a 3-2 win over the top-ranked Breck Mustangs – winners of the past three Class A state tournaments –  on Thursday, January 14 at Anderson Ice Arena.  Wildcat goalie Anna Hanson, in perhaps the finest performance of her career, stopped 31 of the 33 shots she faced from one of the most potent scoring lineups in Minnesota.

After having laid out their hybrid and in-person return plans the week before— the Chisago Lakes School Board’s regular meeting on Thursday, January 7 was mostly procedural in nature.

The Chisago Lakes School Board held its first meeting of 2021 on Monday, January 4 to discuss new developments with the return to learn model, hoping to get students back into the schools as soon as possible.

Jerry Vitalis has seen it all at the school board level. The longest consecutive serving school board member in Minnesota participated in his final meeting on Thursday, December 17. He decided not to run for re-election for another term.

North Branch 'support stars' needed ASAP
The COVID-19 virus situation is impacting everything on the planet— not the least of which is a shortage of employees for public schools.  Support staff and substitute instructors are in high demand as regular employees either take leaves, call in sick, or are placing themselves in isolation to quarantine after suspected exposure to the virus.

Distance learning at CL through Jan. 22
The Chisago Lakes School Board bumped a scheduled special meeting up two days and met Monday, November 30.  In the meeting, there were updates on the learning models, activities and small in-person gatherings while in the distance learning model.

Primary School project moves forward with board approval
With most of the major construction projects from Chisago Lakes’ 2017 bond referendum finishing up, the district will be able to use the last of the money to take on a Primary School renovation project, tentatively slated to begin construction this summer.

Groundbreaking for Community Center
Members of the current and past Chisago Lakes School Board were on hand to break ground on the new community center.  The building will sit on the current student parking lot next to the swimming pool.  The community center will be utilized by both students and the public and is expected to be completed by February of 2019.

Friday, April 20 was the 19th anniversary of the Columbine High School mass shooting murders.  On this day Chisago Lakes high schoolers, and more than 2,600 other student groups around the nation,  participated in walkouts and respectful protest.

The Chisago Lakes School Board met April 12 for a regular meeting.  All members were in attendance.  After approving paying the bills, the board recognized student athletes from the winter sports season.
