Speech team performs well in Duluth
The Chisago Lakes Speech Team attended the speech meet at Denfeld High School on Saturday, February 2.  Back Row: Olivia Stevermer  (6th Place honors in Extemporaneous Speaking), Alice Johnson (4th Place in Storytelling), Reece Friedner (3rd Place in Discussion), Grace Lasuita (1st Place honors in Original Oratory), and Emma O'Connell (Honorable Mention in Prose).  Front Row: Jessica Nelson (Honorable Mention in Poetry), Katelyn Mikesell (Honorable Mention in Poetry), and Clio Johnson (3rd Place in Poetry).

Larson wins NBAMS spelling bee
North Branch Area Middle School (NBAMS) is proud to announce that 7th grade student Grace Larson is the winner of the 2019 Spelling Bee! Larson earned her victory by correctly spelling the word "electrolysis."

Chisago Lakes School District spelling bee produces three winners
The Chisago Lakes Area Schools District Spelling Bee took place at the CLHS Performing Arts Center.  It was a two hour long affair that involved 24 spellers from 6th-8th grades. The winner of the Bee was an 8th grade student from the Middle School, Sophia Shuga – the championship word was “dissertation.” Sixth graders, Laney Gibbs and Noah Arndt took 2nd and 3rd place, respectively. Chisago Lakes Community Education also would like to thank the judges – Kevin Stenson, Matt Silver and Dani Strenke, for their undertaking.

Chisago Lakes/North Branch co-op robotics season kicks off
The 2019 FIRST Robotics season kicked off Saturday, January 5, with the game reveal.  Destination: Deep Space is the game and teams will need to load carriers and rockets with cargo (orange vinyl balls) and place hatch covers to secure the cargo.  To start the game, teams will be blinded by a sandstorm and have to drive their robots using only their cameras.  Team 3038, a cooperative team between North Branch and Chisago Lakes, now has 6 1/2 weeks to build their robot to play the game  The team will be competing in the 10,000 Lakes Regional at the University of Minnesota in March.  To view the game animation, go to YouTube and search for Destination Deep Space.

Pine Tech year-free scholarship expands to North Branch
Graduates in the Class of 2019 from North Branch High School now have an opportunity too good to pass-up. The North Branch district is now included in the Kick Start Scholarship program, with Pine Technical and Community College in Pine City. To qualify the student’s family should be eligible for Free and Reduced Meal Programs. They do not have to be enrolled and using the benefit, they just need to qualify. To determine that, go to www.isd138.org/Page/143 and fill in a program application found on the page.

Lakeside students earn Pajama Day for their 'Toys for Teens' drive
Lakeside School students donated toys to “Toys for Teens” collection and earned a pajama day at school last week. Classes contributed 402 toy items in total.

North Branch School Board sets 2019 levy, extends superintendent contract
The North Branch school District sold $4 million worth of Aid Anticipation Certificates last week to help with immediate cash flow.  This type of borrowing is done regularly by school districts in Minnesota to fill gaps until revenues arrive.

MN Restaurant Association Presents Awards Prostart Educator Of Excellence
Marilyn Fagerness became a family and consumer science (FACS) teacher in the fall of 1990, after five years of full-time subbing at North Branch Area High School. Four years ago, when most people would choose to start gliding towards retirement, Fagerness took on one of her biggest professional challenges: implementing the ProStart program at North Branch Area High School. Through this program, students have gotten their foot in the door in the culinary industry.

Groundbreaking for Community Center
Members of the current and past Chisago Lakes School Board were on hand to break ground on the new community center.  The building will sit on the current student parking lot next to the swimming pool.  The community center will be utilized by both students and the public and is expected to be completed by February of 2019.

CLHS students promote discussion, sharing of ideas as part of walk-out
Friday, April 20 was the 19th anniversary of the Columbine High School mass shooting murders.  On this day Chisago Lakes high schoolers, and more than 2,600 other student groups around the nation,  participated in walkouts and respectful protest.

Chisago Lakes School Board gets good news on construction projects
The Chisago Lakes School Board met April 12 for a regular meeting.  All members were in attendance.  After approving paying the bills, the board recognized student athletes from the winter sports season.
