numbers and child care space update | When the voters in North Branch approved their referendum spending a few years ago they must have known something was in the air for district growth. We reported in June the district is experiencing general overall enrollment growth for the first time in years, which is positive for funding. | Viking Vittles put out 9,000 bags last year; Wed. and Thurs. pick-ups coming | Viking Vittles just wrapped up the 2021-2022 school year having distributed over 9,000 bags of food providing 18,000 plus meals for student PK-5th grade who are food insecure. In addition, care closets at the middle and high school not only provided food but school supplies, personal care items, as well as clothing such as winter coats, hats, mittens and shoes for students in need. | Edelstein Foundation funding tops $1 million | Picture this time of year in 1909, as graduates from the North Branch High School gathered for commencement of the first North Branch High School Class. The valedictorian could not have known that the typed text of his speech would be read and re-read over the following decades. Valedictorian Jacob Edelstein and his brother David and their sister Ruth, carved their place in North Branch history in establishing a pool of money that has now surpassed $1 million in scholarships awarded to North Branch grads. The situation leaves North Branch School Board members taking an early look at next year’s budget, realistically basing decisions thus far on a known two percent aid increase.
