Phoenix Academy gauging interest in two-grade expansion
The next school year might bring growth to the Phoenix Academy charter school, housed in Trinity Church, North Branch.  The school has started the wheels turning on adding grades 7 and 8 to the elementary facility of 116 pupils.  If you have new middle schoolers who might benefit from the charter school program; staff and administration encourage you to look into Phoenix Academy.  The phone number is 651-237-0656.

Bartz awarded NBAEF grant
Second grade teacher Samantha Bartz poses for a photo with her students after learning she has been awarded a North Branch Area Education Foundation grant for equipment related to the “Viking Voice” weekly video magazine published by the school. Inback row, some Foundation Board members enjoy the moment. The Foundation is 12 years old this year and has given the North Branch Area Schools multiple thousands of dollars in support for instructional supplments, from free field trip adventures to cutting edge equipment.

Students had fun solving puzzles and fitting the clues together to "Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library", an Escape Room that was set up afterschool in the Chisago Lakes Middle School Media Center's Makerspace.

North Branch School Board; budget tweaks getting a jump on future gap
The financial director at North Branch Area Public Schools had kind of a good news-bad news presentation at last week’s School Board meeting.  The district needs to balance its budget by trimming about half a million dollars in order to put the district in good shape for 2020-2021.

Supt. Henton accepts MASA Executive Director position, to leave North Branch July 1
The Minnesota Association of School Administrators (MASA) has announced that North Branch Area Public Schools (NBAPS) Superintendent Deb Henton will be its next Executive Director. Henton will continue to serve as the school district's Superintendent until June 30. and Her work with MASA starts July 1.

North Branch School Board update
With four of six members attending the 2020 organizational meeting last week, the North Branch School Board didn’t find itself veering off into much discussion. Member Heather Osagiede was participating on a two-way speaker phone and was not visible during the meeting, and Kevin Bollman was absent.

North Branch and Chisago Lakes robotic team finishes high in local competition
North Branch Middle School was hosting 56 teams participating in the High Tech Kids Robotics Qualifying Tournament December 14-15.  North Branch had three teams competing and Chisago Lakes had two.

North Branch robotics teams fare well at Lakeville tournament
Three North Branch FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) teams competed in late November  at Lakeville South High School.  With numerous first year groups, it was a tremendous learning experience for driving the robot, learning game strategies, and finding ways to improve the robot before the next competition.

North Branch support staff accepts award
Resource Training & Solutions honored 116 Educational Support Staff at the 2019 ESS Recognition Event on Wednesday, November 20.  The 2018 Educational Support Staff Awards (ESS) were hosted by the Executive Director at Resource Training & Solutions.   Over 300 attended the annual event. Schools and districts across Resource's central Minnesota region nominate award recipients based on suggested criteria that includes knowledge of work responsibilities, demonstration of safety, cultivation of respect, acting as a positive role model, displaying genuine concern for others, and making a difference in the lives of students, staff, and the community. Public, private, parochial, and charter schools were included in the event, as well as Meeker and Wright Special Education Cooperative, the West Central Education District, and the Wright Technical Center.
Participating school districts, along with Resource Training & Solutions, sponsor the Educational Support Staff Awards (ESS).

Groundbreaking for Community Center
Members of the current and past Chisago Lakes School Board were on hand to break ground on the new community center.  The building will sit on the current student parking lot next to the swimming pool.  The community center will be utilized by both students and the public and is expected to be completed by February of 2019.

Friday, April 20 was the 19th anniversary of the Columbine High School mass shooting murders.  On this day Chisago Lakes high schoolers, and more than 2,600 other student groups around the nation,  participated in walkouts and respectful protest.

The Chisago Lakes School Board met April 12 for a regular meeting.  All members were in attendance.  After approving paying the bills, the board recognized student athletes from the winter sports season.
