Budget cuts finalized in special Chisago Lakes board meeting
The Chisago Lake school board spent nearly three hours Monday, April 5 hearing from concerned staff and community members and discussing their best course of action in regards to the $1.4 million pending cuts that were announced last month.

Chisago Lakes students represent at BPA state
Chisago Lakes High School students earned recognition at Minnesota Business Professionals of America State conference. Twelve students from Chisago Lakes participated in the annual Minnesota Business Professionals of America (BPA) State Leadership Conference held virtually over the past two weeks. During the school year, 1,200 Minnesota BPA student members take part in the organization's competitive events program, allowing them to compete in events focused in the areas of finance, business administration, management information systems, digital communication and design, and management, marketing and communication.

North Branch bringing back school community service day
The North Branch Area School District plans to bring back Community Service Day this May, and chores and projects for the students to do are being set-up now.  The public is asked to suggest things that students could handle, in a safe socially distanced manner and that would fulfill the philosophy behind this 10-year-old tradition in the district.  Due to covid-19 last spring Community Service Day didn’t happen, and Superintendent Sara Paul looks forward to activating it again.

North Branch budget based on one percent state pupil aid increase
The North Branch School Board was reviewing the school district budget information recently for the 2021-2022 year and if the state legislature goes with a minimum of just a one percent increase in aid, North Branch will be okay.  This was a good thing for Director of Finance and Human Resources Todd Tetzlaff to be able to explain.

North Branch crowns their homecoming royalty!

The North Branch Area High School celebrated its royals in a new covid-version of homecoming in the winter. The “snowcoming” royalty were crowned Tuesday morning and they are Chloe Fortuna and Harrison Toussaint. More photos of the candidates inside, on page 7.

North Branch High School goes public with redesign; upcoming class of students to kick off new offerings, credits
North Branch High School already is home to course offerings that push the boundary of most standard high schools, for example, a culinary course and modern kitchen classroom for students to get started down a professional food service path.  And, the Junior ROTC program for those who want a taste of a military career.

Area student gets once-in-a-lifetime opportunity this spring
Come the month of March when many students are in spring break mode there’ll be one high school junior  in Almelund, who will be gearing up for just the opposite.  
Selected to attend the Congress of Future Medical Leaders, Brooklyn Nelson will be immersed in a two day on-line experience, bringing together Nobel Laureates and National Medal of Science winners, top medical school Deans and even patients sharing knowledge and real life experiences to inspire, motivate and recognize select high achieving students.

Chisago Lakes beats top-ranked Breck to set the tone for season

The fifth-ranked Wildcat girls hockey team opened the season with a bang, as Jenna Lawry scored a hat trick to lead the Wildcats to a 3-2 win over the top-ranked Breck Mustangs – winners of the past three Class A state tournaments –  on Thursday, January 14 at Anderson Ice Arena.  Wildcat goalie Anna Hanson, in perhaps the finest performance of her career, stopped 31 of the 33 shots she faced from one of the most potent scoring lineups in Minnesota.

North Branch School Board organizes; hears Covid prep update for students' return
The North Branch District 138 School Board last week elected officers, set wages and meeting dates and addressed a host of other annual organizing tasks, with a new chair guiding the Board for the first time in years. (See story on Kirby Ekstrom stepping down.)

Groundbreaking for Community Center
Members of the current and past Chisago Lakes School Board were on hand to break ground on the new community center.  The building will sit on the current student parking lot next to the swimming pool.  The community center will be utilized by both students and the public and is expected to be completed by February of 2019.

CLHS students promote discussion, sharing of ideas as part of walk-out
Friday, April 20 was the 19th anniversary of the Columbine High School mass shooting murders.  On this day Chisago Lakes high schoolers, and more than 2,600 other student groups around the nation,  participated in walkouts and respectful protest.

The Chisago Lakes School Board met April 12 for a regular meeting.  All members were in attendance.  After approving paying the bills, the board recognized student athletes from the winter sports season.
