Darryl Johnson

Darryl Johnson died November 29, 2018 while a patient at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. Darryl Johnson was born April 21, 1940 and grew up on his family farm in Chisago City.  His grandparents immigrated from Sweden and homesteaded the farm.  A tall young man, Darryl excelled in basketball.  He left the area in the early 1960's to join the US Navy.  Upon his return, he was involved in a major auto accident, leaving him quadriplegic.

As evidence of his intelligence and strength, he became educated as an accountant and had a long career with the City of Minneapolis.  He lived on his own for decades, overcoming the complications of paralysis.   Upon retiring he moved into assisted living in Midtown Minneapolis.

I was a little girl during most of Darryl's life.  Knowing that my mother was very fond of Darryl, I reached out and reconnected with Darryl in 2015.  Together we built a strong family relationship and I grew from being a “little pest” to a friend.

Darryl generously donated his body to the University of Minnesota - School of Medicine, one final job teaching people how to become physicians.
Darryl is survived by his brother Donald W. Johnson (Minneapolis), first cousins once-removed Kristina Blake (Portland, Oregon), Jon Blake (Seattle, Washington) and Jon's son Colin Blake (Alameda, California).  Darryl’s parents, William and Veronica Johnson, preceded him in death.

A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, April 27, 2019 at Fairview Cemetery in Lindstrom, MN.

I would like to express deep gratitude to Tonya and Bridget, his caregivers for their care and friendship which meant a lot to Darryl.  In addition, thank you to neighbors of the Johnson farm; the Chisago County Historical Society; Jennifer Hegstad (Chisago Lakes High School) and Linda Christianson, without whose help I wouldn't have been able to make the final arrangements for Darryl to be buried with family.

Arrangements by the Grandstrand Funeral Home in Lindstrom.  Condolences may be expressed online at www.grandstrandfh.com
