Bonnie Hagen

Bonnie Judith (Thorsell) Hagen, 89, died March 7, 2021, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

She was born at her parents’ home in Chisago County, Minnesota, on November 6, 1931. She was the second daughter of five.  Bonnie graduated in 1950 from North Branch High School in North Branch, MN. She worked at Federal Reserve Bank in Minneapolis, MN, before becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse.  Bonnie worked at the Minneapolis VA Hospital for seven years and became friends with Opal Hagen who introduced her to her brother Carlyle. Bonnie and Carlyle were married on October 10, 1959, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Almelund, MN.

Bonnie worked as a Nurse’s Aide at Bethesda Nursing home for 17 years and retired in 2002. Bonnie came to South Dakota in 1959 and was introduced to a very large Hagen family. She enjoyed spending time with her friends and family. Bonnie and Wava Homandberg had spent a lot of time on shopping trips, buying and returning items purchased while their husbands wondered “When will they get home”!

Bonnie was involved with her church with Ladies Aid, WELCA, RLD Club, and was a Sunday School teacher. Bonnie loved gardening and planting flowers.

She lived at Bethesda Nursing Home, Beresford, SD, for the last three years.

Grateful to have shared in her life are her daughter, Marilee Hagen of Alcester; son Joel (Jeannie) Hagen of Phoenix, AZ and their sons, Jay of Phoenix and Ryan of Lexington Park, MD; daughters, Jeanine Hagen Kelly of Tea and her sons, Josh Miller Kelly of Tea, and Andrew Miller Kelly of Elk Point, SD, and Kari Hagen of Sioux Falls; and a brother-in-law, Ken Carlson of Sioux Falls. Preceding her in death are her husband Carlyle; infant son John and her parents, Charlie and Edna (Anderson) Thorsell.

Visitation will be Friday, March 12, from 5-7 p.m. at the church with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Saturday, March 13, 2021, at Nathanael Lutheran Church in Alcester, South Dakota. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Alcester.  wassfuneral home.com
