Flora Jill Grainger

Flora Jill Grainger, 74 years, passed away on Wednesday, March 10, 2021 at home. She was a resident of Vancouver, Washington for 17 years.

Jill, as she wanted to be called, was born on December 24, 1946 in Buffalo, New York to her parents, John J. and Flora L. (Lewis) Davis. She earned her Bachelor's Degree from the University of New York in Buffalo, New York.  Jill is survived by her husband, Robert at home; son Robert Scott Grainger of Vancouver, Washington; daughter Stacy L. Nilles of Washougal, Washington; brother, Scott J. Davis of Virginia; four granddaughters, Katherine R. Grainger, Adelaide W. Grainger, Elizabeth Maia Nilles, Sarah Kathryn Nilles; grandson Tai Jingshun Scott Grainger.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Jill was passionate in all of her loves!  Family came first and foremost.  She dedicated her younger days to being home whenever the kids were there.  As they grew, she reached out to the community and served as the school nurse.  Once they were old enough, she became a paramedic and then the administrator of the local ambulance service in Lindstrom, Minnesota.

When the kids married and relocated to the Pacific Northwest, we migrated to be near them.  Jill’s grandchildren were the joy of her life.  She loved them each in a special way.

In our younger days we were skiers.  As we aged, we became avid sailors and spent many weekends sailing Lake Superior with friends in Minnesota.   Later, we sailed the Caribbean with family & friends, chartering boats up & down the Caribbean Island chain.  Jill was a gourmet cook and loved preparing robust meals for as big of a crowd as she could gather around her.  She took particular joy in planning the menu and preparing meals for our family gatherings and the many travel adventures we had with friends from around the country.

From her time as a paramedic Jill developed a strong appreciation for the first responders, firemen, and police officers that serve our communities and keep us all safe.  In these times of Covid-19 distancing, we are not planning a memorial service or visitation.  Because our family and friends live far and wide, we will hold small gatherings in various locations throughout the year as travel opens up and time permits.

If you are inclined to remember Jill in a special way, her favorite charity was Tunnel2Towers.org.  This organization is dedicated to paying off the mortgage of surviving families of first responders, firemen, and police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

Jill received the diagnosis of stage 4 pancreatic cancer in late December.  We knew the rest of our time together here on earth would be short so we invited friends and family to be with us during her last weeks so all could celebrate a life well lived with her.  Jill will be present in spirit as well as memory as we navigate the future and live our lives to the fullest until we are reunited in Heaven.  Meanwhile, I’m pretty sure she has petitioned God for an Amazon and Land’s End account until I arrive to subsidize it.  Jill; you will continue to be loved by all.

In Memoriam In lieu of flowers at a funeral service, a loved one’s memory can be honored through donations to the foundation. Tunnel2Towers.org or call at 718-987-1931.
