Larry Ertl

Larry M. Ertl (Lorenz) age 85 of Center City passed away at his home on Friday, April 9, 2021 and is now in God’s garden in heaven.

Larry was born in Sauk Centre, Minnesota on May 30, 1935 to parents George and Anne Ertl.  He attended Sauk Centre Schools and graduated in 1953. He resided in Sauk Centre and worked on the family farm. He married the love of his life, Joan Barbara Speldrich, on June 12, 1958. Initially they continued to live in Sauk Centre until relocating to Fergus Falls, Minnesota, where they owned and operated a local shoe store. They welcomed daughter, Barbara in 1963 and son, Robert in 1965.

In 1966, they moved to Apple Valley where Larry took a sales and carpentry position with Plywood Minnesota until he retired in 2001.  While in Apple Valley, Larry and Joan welcomed two  children, David in 1967 and Donald in 1969, into their family.  They moved to Chisago City, MN just prior to moving to their lifelong home in Center City, MN.  It was in Center City where they raised their four children and added son Matthew in 1978, who died shortly after birth.

Larry was soft spoken but his heart was overflowing with love for others.  He was so joyful that many talked about his constant smile and his signature wave. He was a very religious man who worked hard at everything he took on; whether it was gardening, cooking, building things or playing “farmer” up at Sauk Centre.  He loved his family more than anything.  This was more than evident as he was Joan’s care-taker for over 30 years until her passing in 2009. Other than his family, some of his passions were spending time outdoors and caring for his many birds. Larry will be remembered for his kindness and loving spirit.  His generosity extended to the community where Larry was active in the Knights of Columbus and at St. Bridget’s.

He was preceded in death by Joan Ertl, his wife of 50 years; his son Matthew; his parents, George and Anne Ertl; brothers Michael R. (1936), Michael R (1937) and John, and brother-in-law Richard Sunderman.

Larry is survived by his children; Barb (Chuck) Wessberg, Bob (Sarah), Dave (Sara) and Don (Jeanne), grandchildren Breanna Schueller, Garrett and Luke Wessberg; Benjamin and Maddie Ertl, Tyler (Megan) Ertl, Bayley (Brandon) Thauwald, Keeley and Evan Ertl; great-grandchildren Brynley and Ellary (Schueller) and Henry (Thauwald); his sister Barbara Sunderman, niece and nephews.

Mass of Christian burial 11: a.m. Friday, April 16, 2021, St. Bridget of Sweden Catholic Church in Lindstrom, Minnesota. Visitation 5-7 p.m. Thursday, April 15, 2021 at Grandstrand Funeral Home in Lindstrom and 30 minutes prior to Mass at church.  Interment at Calvary Cemetery in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.  Arrangements by Grandstrand Funeral Home in Lindstrom.  Condolences may be expressed online at www.grandstrandfh.com
