Larry Nelson

Larry D. Nelson, age 71 of Lindstrom, Minnesota passed away on March 28, 2021.  He was born in Mahnomen, Minnesota on April 5, 1949 to parents Clarence and Clara (Fagre) Nelson.

Larry lived in the country by Waubun, Minnesota.  When he was young his family moved to the cities to be nearer to his father’s job.  He graduated from Central High School in St. Paul.

He moved to Cass Lake, Minnesota and stayed with cousins and worked in a lumber mill. While in Cass Lake he attended Bemidji State University for a short time.  He moved back to Waubun and worked at his cousin’s bait shop. It was while he was in Waubun that he met his future wife Marjorie “Midge” M. Wolbeck at a prayer and praise service.

Larry and Midge were married on June 3, 1978, and moved to St. Paul. He worked for Windsor Landscaping until 1981 when he got a job as a machine operator. Larry and Midge moved to Lindstrom in 1984.

Over the years he logged some long days and worked many hours providing for his wife and two children. He worked at National Packaging, Stone Container and finally retired from Smurfit Stone, all the same place with different owners. Larry enjoyed gardening and yardwork, fishing, and taking walks on the North Shore while collecting rocks and driftwood.  He also enjoyed playing cards and board games, especially Scrabble and Dominoes. Larry loved to sing and was in the church choir for many years. He sang solos and duets and helped lead the liturgy. Larry took training to be a marriage officiant and officiated at his nephew’s wedding.

In his retirement Larry loved spending time with his grandsons. He also did security at Chisago Lake Lutheran Church, visited folks who were shut ins or in the nursing homes, and parked cars at the State Fair with his brothers. Larry also went on several mission trips with church youth. With his caring ways, Larry could connect with both the young and the old.

Larry is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Terry.

He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years Midge; son Ryan (Becky) Nelson; daughter Lisa Nelson; grandsons James and Connor, (his grandsons were everything to him); brothers Darryl (Joyce) Nelson, Merlyn (Pat) Nelson, and Doug (Linda) Nelson, sister Eileen (Steve) Amberg; sister-in-law Carol Nelson; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 16, 2021 at Chisago Lake Lutheran Church in Center City.  Visitation one hour prior to the service at Church.  Interment at Hillside Cemetery in Center City.  Arrangements by Grandstrand Funeral Home in Lindstrom.  Condolences may be expressed online at www. grandstrandfh.com
