David F. Carlson, 82, died February 3, 2021 in Minneapolis. On July 24, a memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lindstrom, MN. Service at 11 am with visitation one hour prior. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Trinity Lutheran Church.
Dave was born March 20,1938 to Rev. Frank and Stella (Nelson) Carlson in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He received a B.A. from Augustana College, a Master of Divinity from Augustana Seminary (Rock Island, IL), and a Master of Theology from Andover-Newton Theological Seminary (Newton Centre, MA). Ordained as a Lutheran minister in 1966, he served in the parish, and as a chaplain in prison and mental health and hospital settings. A pioneer in the parish nurse movement, he was a co-founder of the national Health Ministry Association. In Minnesota, Dave served at Fairview Hospital and Allina Health as a teaching chaplain (ACPE Supervisor) and retired from Allina in 2014. In his retirement, he enjoyed teaching classes in spirituality at Trinity Lutheran Church. Dave was a compassionate man, an energetic innovator, and an optimistic visionary.
Dave married Betty (Glynn) in 1987. In 2000, they started an alpaca farm, Spirit Song Alpacas. Both had dreamed of tending sheep when they were young, but once they met the alpacas, they chose to share their lives with these charming creatures, as well their beloved dogs and cats.
Dave is preceded in death by his parents and his older brother Donald. Dave is survived by his loving wife Betty of 33 years; his children from a former marriage, Chris Bayliss, TJ Carlson (Misty), Joel Carlson (fiancé Monica Hanson); his grandchildren, Jamie Bayliss (Zack Goehner), Jesse Bayliss (Patrick O’Riley), Hanna Carlson, Jax Carlson, Drew Carlson, Ian Carlson, Nathan Carlson; his great-grandchildren, Luke Goehner, William Goehner, Adelaide O’Riley, Jack O’Riley, and Ooma O’Riley; his brother Daniel (Bobbi) and his sister-in-law, Shirley Carlson.
He will always be loved and missed by his family and friends.
