Alfred “Al” Schmidt passed away in Stillwater, Minnesota October 13, 2021 at the age of 92. Born November 7, 1928, he grew up on his family’s resort on Green Lake in Chisago City. At age 17 he joined the Army and served his country for seven years, stationed in both Korea and Japan. While in Japan, he met and married Chiyoko, his wife of 59 years. In 1952, he and “babe”, as so many affectionately knew her, returned to his hometown where he owned and operated Schmidt Oil Company until his retirement.
He loved the outdoors and spent his free time at his cabins in Brimson, Minnesota and Northern Wisconsin. He found happiness in fishing and he would be out on the lake any chance he had trying to catch the “big” one. He would often share his catch among his kids and grandkids-his fish fries were legendary.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Chiyoko. He is survived by his three children; Carol (Reid) Johnson, Sandy (Dan) Moody and Tom (Holly) Schmidt; 10 grandchildren; and 21 great grandchildren.
A visitation will be held on October 30 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at Grandstrand Funeral Home in Lindstrom. Immediate family will gather at the Wisconsin cabin next spring for the fishing opener to celebrate his life, in a place and at a time he cherished.
