James Jeffers

James A. Jeffers, age 90 of North Branch died on Tuesday, March 29, 2022, at M Health Fairview Ridges in Burnsville, MN.

James Allen Jeffers was born in Stambaugh, MI to James and Alice (Allen) Jeffers.  Jim had various jobs growing up in the small mining town, but the one he loved to talk about was setting up pins in the bowling alley.  It was a manual job; you had to stay out of the way so you didn’t get hit with flying pins or bowling balls!  After graduating from Stambaugh High School he left home and moved to St Paul MN. He got a job at CutPrice grocery store until he was drafted into the military in 1952.  At the time, they were looking for volunteers to join the Marine Corp, so he decided to become a Marine.  Since he had taken classes in typing and bookkeeping in high school, he was a perfect candidate to work as a Supply Clerk. During the Korean War he was stationed at Camp Pendleton, CA and didn’t have to go overseas. He always credited that decision to become a Marine for saving his life, as many others weren’t as lucky to make it home from the war.

After he received an honorable discharge in 1954, he went back to work in the grocery business.  He met Beverly (Linde) while he was the assistant manager, and she was working as a cashier at the same store and soon after they married.  They raised four children in West St Paul, MN while Jim managed several Applebaum stores and opened the very first Target branded grocery store in Roseville, MN in 1962.

Jim loved the outdoors.  In his younger years he loved to hunt, fish, smelt and snowmobile.  Jim and Bev purchased a hobby farm in Sunrise, Minnesota in 1968 where he enjoyed spending weekends and the summers during his working years and later retired on the farm.  He enjoyed the challenges of hobby farming, raising animals, baling hay and trying new things. He enjoyed giving back to the community by providing Santa the candy canes to give the children at Santa Day in Almelund for over 35 years. He was also one of several founding members of the Sunrise Snow Eagles Snowmobile Club, actively maintaining and grooming trails as well as raising money for new equipment.  Jim enjoyed spending time with his growing family, being with people and he had a knack for telling jokes.

On February 16, Jim and Bev celebrated 65 years of marriage.  Jim also enjoyed 40 years of retirement; early retirement allowed them to travel throughout the United States.  He enjoyed the national parks, state parks and even county parks. What he loved most was traveling back to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to visit family and old friends.  Jim’s heart was in th UP as it always felt like home.  A road trip to Michigan was a quick easy get away. They moved off the farm to downsize in 2019 and settled in North Branch.

Jim is survived by his wife Beverly; son Roger (Mickey) Jeffers of Avon; daughter Brenda Corbit of Coon Rapids; daughter Deborah (Robert) Olson of Almelund; eight grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. He is preceded in death by his son Bruce Jeffers; parents Jim and Alice Jeffers; sister Merle Ann Victorson; brother Ed Jeffers; son-in-law Roger Corbit.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 5, 2022 at Grandstrand Funeral Home in North Branch with Rev. Matt Saarem officiating.  Interment followed the service at Sunrise Cemetery in Sunrise.  Military honors were provided by the North Branch American Legion Post #86.

Arrangements were under the direction and care of Grandstrand Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North Branch.  www.grand strandfh.com
