Steve was the youngest son of Ansel and Myrtle (Fischer) Schendel. He grew up in Minneapolis with the Incarnation Church crowd. Steve graduated from De LaSalle High School in 1965. He met the love of his life, Gail in 1965 during rehearsals for “The King and I.” Steve enlisted in the Navy in 1967. He earned the rank of Bowsan’s Mate, serving on the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany during the Vietnam War.
Steve was a wonderful writer and could give a great toast. He enjoyed fishing and playing golf. Steve loved to drive and delivered pizzas, packages for Powers and driving for various departments for the City of Minneapolis, since 1979. He just retired from the City of Minneapolis on June 13, 2016.
Steve is survived by Gail, his wife of 37 years. Special nephew Antonio (Kimme) Perez-Cajina; brothers, Stan, Tom (Mary Jo), John (Ida) and brother in law Ernesto Perez-Cajina as well as many nieces and nephews other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ansel and Myrtle Schendel and sister Mary Perez-Cajina.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the family.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 24, 2016 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Taylors Falls with Fr. Frank Wampach Officiating. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at the Grandstrand Funeral Home in Lindstrom and also one hour prior to mass, at church, on Friday.
Interment will take place at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
