This is the annual statewide tornado and severe weather alert day. Locally all weather sirens will be activated and tested by the sheriff’s department twice. Sirens will sound at 1:45 and 6:55 p.m.
When sirens go off consider it a reminder to double-check for operational flashlights, portable radios and batteries. Spend time with young ones explaining what they need to do during severe weather.
Inspect your place of shelter-- is it clear and useable in short notice? Do you have extra water and some snacks set aside in the event of a power outage?
Useful advice from the chief deputy: even if the sirens sound in the middle of the night, grab a pair of shoes on your way to the basement or lower level. He said metal, broken glass, wood splinters and other debris created in a storm can cause all kinds of injury. Nobody would ever wish to be barefoot or in slippers in the aftermath of a tornado.
