Edna spent her childhood years on a farm in Linwood Township in Anoka County. She was valedictorian of the 1941 Forest Lake High School graduating class. Following graduation, she did office work in St. Paul. Oct. 20, 1945 she married John Freed. After working in the Twin Cities for a time, they moved to his parents' farm in Shafer Township. Through the years they raised six children.
In 1995 Edna and John sold their farm and moved to North Branch. Since late 2003 Edna lived with her daughter Carol in Sauk Rapids, Minn.
Edna was active in her church and community as well as writing the "news" of the Palmdale area and articles for the local newspapers. She also wrote poetry, stories of her childhood, and the words for the centennial hymn of her church "Almelund Church Spire." She loved to read, do crosswords and enjoyed crafts, particularly embroidery. Family was important to her, especially her grandchildren.
Edna passed away Aug. 9, 2004, in St. Cloud, Minn.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Nancy Williams, brother Lawrence Frenning, and sisters: Margaret Holmgren and Eleanor Shogren, and son-in-law Billy Williams Sr.
She is survived by her children Barbara (Terry) LaCanne, of Kenyon; Dennis (Karen), of Lindstrom; Jerry (Roberta), of Little Falls; David (Kathy), of Maple Grove; and Carol Freed, of Sauk Rapids; her sister, Helen Bellin; brothers: Robert (Norma) Frenning and Donald (Dorothy) Frenning; sister-in-laws: Sis Frenning and Dorothy (Glen) Berglund; brother-in-law, Rodney Shogren; 16 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, as well as many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, in Almelund, with burial at the church cemetery. Arrangements by the Grandstrand Funeral Home in Lindstorm.
