Offensively, Al Magnuson is still concerned, but the concern is easier to swallow when his team wins, despite the lack of production. Last Tuesday, despite scoring two goals, the Chisago Lakes girls hockey team skated to a 2-0 win over Duluth East, their second win of the season.

Both wins have now come against section opponents (Forest Lake and East).  Their win over East is easily their biggest win of the season thus far.

Chisago peppered the Greyhound net in the first period but nothing got through.  The Wildcats put a total of 11 shots on goal compared to East's three.  Both goalies didn't flinch, stopping everything they saw, making it 0-0 after one.

“We had our chances and we weren't putting it away,” said Al Magnuson, Chisago Lakes girls head hockey coach.  “They got some shots near the end when we were in the penalty box, but other than that, we got all of the shots.  They just couldn't get it out of the zone.  The girls did a nice job forechecking.”

It took a power play for the 'Cats to finally get on the board in the second period.  After an East penalty, Chantel Duffney scored her first goal of the season at the 5:47 mark.  Rhiannon Sauter grabbed the only assist.  The goal moved the Wildcats in front 1-0, a lead they would hold the rest of the period.  Once again, Chisago dominated the shots department, adding 12 more in the second for a two period total of 23.

“The girls kept working hard.  They stuck to the gameplan, boxing them in their zone and putting the puck on the net,” replied Magnuson.

Meanwhile, East, who only had three shots on Jackie Weiden in the first, managed just three in the second.

It was more of the same as the Wildcats kept the pressure on in the third, adding eight more shots to their total, giving them 30 for the game.  One of their eight shots in the third found the back of the net. Even though the Greyhounds managed 11 shots in the third, none of them got through.

Leading 1-0, Chisago pushed their lead to 2-0 after Lexi Medellin scored her first goal of the season.  Nicole Grossmann added the assist.  The goal put a final exclamation point on the 'Cats 2-0 win, moving their season record to 2-2.

“Jackie came up with some big saves for us,” commented Magnuson. “They had 11 shots in the third.  We got into some penalty problems but Jackie bailed us out.  She came up huge.”

While the Wildcats struggled to find the back of the net, defensively, it was arguably their best performance of the season.  For the game, Chisago held East to 17 shots on goal.  Between the pipes, Weiden picked up her first shutout of the year.

“They beat us during the regular season last year.  I remember that game.  We outshot them like 40-10 and we still lost,” smiled Magnuson. “We play well at home and that helps.  You never know, we might see them at section time.  It was just a big win for us.  I think the girls are starting to realize that they're getting better.”
