When it comes to the section race, the idea is to stay right behind Cloquet/Esko/Carlton. Barring a total collapse, the Lumberjacks are almost guaranteed a number one seed when the section playoffs roll around. Al Magnuson and the Chisago Lakes Wildcats are gunning for that second seed.

They took another step towards getting that seed last Tuesday, defeating section rival Duluth Denfeld/Central 5-3.

It wasn’t easy. Even though Nicole Grossmann opened up the scoring early in the second period on the power play, Denfeld answered back with a goal of their own three minutes later. Then after Rhiannon Sauter gave Chisago back the lead, Denfeld scored two more goals before the end of the second to take a 3-2 lead heading into the third.

Looking to re-gain the momentum in the third, the Wildcats turned to their power play which produced two goals earlier in the game. Skating with the extra skater, Morgan Baumgard found the back of the net for the Wildcats third power play goal of the game less than two minutes into the third.

It was just what the doctor ordered. From there, Grossmann did the rest, scoring two more times down the stretch, giving her a hat trick and giving Chisago a 5-3 win.

Along with her three goals, Grossmann also added an assist. In addition, Sauter added one goal and three assists.
