Lindstrom community honoring late publisher as Grand Marshal
The eldest of Silver’s three sons, Jeff, will be riding in the lead car in Sunday’s parade. Matt Silver has stepped in as publisher of the Chisago County Press, and Sean graduated from Hamline this spring and is pursuing an advanced degree.
John Silver died in mid-September 2003 at the age of 59.
He ran the Chisago County Press from May 1980 until the day he died. He’s being honored as Grand Marshal for his years of active involvement with the Karl Oskar Days committee and for his civic contributions in general.
John particularly enjoyed being master of ceremonies for and sponsoring the boat regatta and music performances at beach park during K.O. Days. He’d always make himself available to pitch in and do what needed to be done to make Karl Oskar Days a success.
He liked to kid about being entrusted as Keeper of the Karl Oskar Snuffbox.
Even though John didn’t take himself too seriously; he did take seriously the concepts of community spirit and duty to give back to one’s community. Every week in his publisher’s column he would commend somebody for doing the right thing by the citizenry. He was also not shy about pointing out where the local community had been let down by certain decision-makers.
What would John make of the Grand Marshal honor and being asked to lead the parade?
He’d probably decline in his colorfully gallant style and name a dozen others who deserved the honor more. Here’s to you John.
