Superior Reds 5 (8 inn.)
With a 13-9 win over North Branch in the past, the Wildcats hit the road last weekend, traveling to Duluth to play in the Duluth Legion baseball tournament.
Right from the beginning, the ‘Cats were stretched to their limits with a first round match-up with the Superior Reds last Friday. Superior won the tournament last season.
Things started off slow but ended fast as all 13 runs in the game were scored after the third inning.
Trailing 4-1 in the fifth, the Wildcats pressed on the accelerator, charging back with a four run rally in the sixth to grab a 5-4 lead. After Superior tied the game 5-5 to force extra innings, Kyle Collins came to the plate in the eighth, and with one swing, gave Chisago an opening win by smacking a three-run home run over the fence, locking up an 8-5 win. Danny Reed also homered in the game, going deep in the fourth.
Reed got the win on the mound, working the final two innings of the game.
Chisago Lakes 11
Mpls. South 4
Still in pool play, the Wildcats kept the train rolling with a decisive 11-4 win over Minneapolis South, also played last Friday.
Chisago scored three in the first, five in the third, one in the fourth, one in the fifth, and one more in the sixth.
Meanwhile, with their bats on fire, Karl Lee did the rest, earning a complete game victory on the mound.
Ham Lake 16
Chisago Lakes 8
Last Saturday, the Wildcats tasted defeat for the first time in the tourney, losing 16-8 to Ham Lake (Blaine & Forest Lake).
The ‘Cats started slow, falling behind 12-0 before fighting back with seven runs in the fourth. Both teams traded blows the rest of way, settling on a 16-8 Ham Lake win.
Thomas Moody and Mark Unger each finished with home runs. Despite the loss, thanks to a 2-1 record in pool play, the Wildcats were still able to advance in the tournament, setting up a rematch with Ham Lake.
Ham Lake 4
Chisago Lakes 0
Game two between the two teams certainly was different than game one, however, the result was not. Thanks to two runs in the third and two more in the sixth, Ham Lake cruised to a 4-0 win last Saturday night. On the mound, Danny Reed picked up the loss.
Making matters worse, the games scheduled for Sunday were cancelled due to rain, sending the ‘Cats home with a 2-2 record, moving their season mark to 8-7 with two games left before playoffs.
