Hannah’s Arms provides adults personal time to learn a craft, make a garment perhaps, and hear about practical things like how to use the local library, camping advice, and instructions on home remedies for simple afflictions.
Lunch is provided and teen volunteers watch participants’ youngsters right nearby. The day is free.
Theresa Williams got the idea and put things together in 1996 as part of the church’s outreach to inexperienced or struggling mothers. Williams and all the volunteers are very friendly and just want to help pass along their skills and experience to those who wish it.
Hannah’s Arms and The Baby Blanket, another St. Bridget’s church program, sort of work together to cover all the bases. The Baby Blanket is a donations distribution place that recycles infant and young children’s clothes and toys-- to give families a little boost.
“All are welcome,” one volunteer, Patti said, as she helped a seamstress with a project. “It doesn’t matter what level (sewing) you are on.” A particularly popular session is when Hannah’s Arms hosts the pajama-making class, Patti added. Sewing is stressed as a money saver for these families and as a creative outlet. When participants attend a certain number of Hannah’s Arms sewing sessions they can take home their own sewing machine.
You don’t have to sew, the craft project this day was decorating a canvas totebag.
Anyone interested in participating please contact 257-8346 or if you have questions about donations of materials or cash, 651-245-2028.
Some upcoming Third Saturdays include learning about stencils and making cards; making ceramic tile hotplates, homemade bread; making a small quilt and later this year, a Christmas tree skirt.
