The Chisago Lakes boys golf team was hoping to avoid what the Chisago Lakes baseball team couldn’t- a season ending loss to North Branch.

In both cases, the Wildcats undefeated conference mark was on the line. On the baseball field, the Vikings snapped the Wildcats perfect record. On the golf course, the ‘Cats got it done.

Led by an even par 36 from Jordan Hawkinson and three 37’s from Mike Tschida, Trent Froberg, and Josh Angrimson, Chisago Lakes cruised to a 17 stroke win last Monday. The win moved the Wildcats final season conference record to 7-0.

“North Branch had a team that had beaten us earlier in the year at the Pine City Scramble. They had a team shoot 62 and our two teams shot 63, so we knew they had the potential to shoot well,” said Bill Bigler, Chisago Lakes head boys golf coach. “Jordan really got us going, he shot well, and our consistency showed once again. It was a good performance.”

Consistency is right. Of the six varsity golfers, 41 was the highest score. Meanwhile, the Vikings finished with four golfers in the 40’s. North Branch was led by Tom Koep’s 39.

“What we shot was pretty much our averages for the year, what they should be shooting,” said Tom Moriarty, North Branch head boys golf coach. “They all had story’s about how a five foot put rimmed out, but for us, we played well. The thing is though, to really be competitive, you have to be below 160. We’re knocking on the door but we’re not there yet. Hopefully we will be there when sections begin.”

Sections begin this week. The Vikings figure to fit in the middle of the pack while Chisago hopes to contend for a trip to state.

“I was glad to see our guys play good against North Branch,” mentioned Bigler. “All the guys are hitting the ball well right now. Now it’s just a matter of getting the putts to fall. That’s what sections will come down to.”
