The Wall Street Journal recently featured a piece on disaster-proofing buildings as a growth industry. A Chisago City native’s product was one of many described in the Sept. 30 edition of The Journal.

Mark Hudoba graduated Chisago Lakes High School in 1989. He is quoted in the article as saying about 30 states have adopted new building codes on roofing and other structural materials where there’s potential for hurricanes and natural disasters.

Hudoba, director of new business at Wayne-Dalton, told The Journal “It’s the codes that are driving the market.”

Other materials described in the article were Dupont’s reinforced safe rooms to install in your home, new roofing, shatter resistant glass and flooding vents.

Working for Wayne-Dalton Corp. in Pensacola, Florida Hudoba invented and developed Fabric Shield one of the disaster-proofing materials featured in the news story.

The Wall Street Journal pictured Hudoba’s house with the fabric shield panels on the windows photographed prior to Hurricane Ivan making land.

The shields became available on the market only recently and are described as plastic-coated cloth that’s easier to install remove than plywood or other window protection measures. Florida and Georgia have certified dealers enrolled to install Fabric Shield.

Hudoba lives in Gulf Breeze, FL with wife Kelly and son Finnegan.

His parents are Gary and Gloria Hudoba of Chisago City. He earned his mechanical engineering and business degrees from the University of Minnesota and his MBA from the University of Western Florida in 2003.
