For local residents, Paula is better known as Paula Greig, a 1974 graduate of Chisago Lakes High School.
At CLHS, she was an active member of the choir and stage choir and performed the lead in the school’s production of The Sound of Music. She also performed in all of the school’s variety shows while she was a student at CLHS.
Since graduating, Slow has remained involved in music. Her talents have earned her performances at the Reiman Auditorium (formerly the Grand Olde Opry) in Nashville and most recently two national music awards.
Last year, Slow received the title of Best Female Vocalist from both the Christian Country Music Association and the Country Gospel Music Guild. She is nominated for the honor from the Christian Country Music Association again this year.
Slow has performed country music for the last 10 years and became involved in the christian country genre six years ago.
She describes her music as updated country with older country mixed in and has released two CDs so far. Slow is currently working on her third CD.
This weekend, Slow will open for the Gatlin Brothers at the Life Light Fest in Sioux Falls, SD before returning to Chisago City for the fishing contest performance Sept. 11.
Slow will perform from 7 to 8 p.m. Sept. 11 before the street dance begins. Although she performs all original songs on her CDs – with the exception of one Conway Twitty remake – Slow will mix in several cover songs of popular country hits during her performance.
Slow now lives in central Wisconsin with her husband and four children, but is excited about being back in the Chisago Lakes area for the performance.
The weekend will include a Team Bass Fishing Tournament starting Friday, Sept. 10. A total of 50 boats will feature 2-person teams fishing on Green Lake and South Center Lake both days of the tourney.
A children’s fishing tournament will also be held Saturday from 10 a.m to noon. Kids under 12 years of age can register at Frankie’s Live Bait to compete for a share of $3,500 in total prizes. The kids will fish from shore on Chisago Lake and the event will be televised by KARE 11’s Ron Schara.
Saturday’s events will include awarding of the prizes and a free street dance. The Chisago Lakes Rotary will sponsor a refreshment stand and the Chisago Lakes High School football program will run a concession stand.
