The 2004 Frankies Live Bait and Marine Team Bass Tournament held September 10 and 11 was a resounding success, attracting many big-name local and regional anglers.

There was a $35,000 payback (100 percent) to the anglers with a bass boat rigged with a 125-hp. motor going to the 1st place winners, and cash and prizes awarded down to 10th place.

On Friday, one group of 25 two-person teams fished Green Lake while the other group of 25 fished North and South Center Lakes.

On Saturday, the groups switched to fish opposite lakes. As is common with most tournaments that attract anglers at the top of their game, mere ounces separated top finishers. And with so much cash and prizes on the table, the official weigh-ins on Friday and Saturday afternoon were tense and exciting to watch.

The event’s Master of Ceremonies was George Cochran, a member of the Ranger Boats Pro Staff and former B.A.S.S. winner. Sponsors for the event were Ranger Boats, Mercury Outboards, Gander Mountain., Minn Kota Trolling Motors, Aqua Innovations and Bernicks.

Top ten finishers:

1. Mark Fisher – Dave Skallet 48.92 lbs. Ranger VS175 bass boat

2. Joe Neely – Jon Isker 48.49 lbs. $4,500

3. Dean Capra – Ted Capra 47.68 lbs. $3,000

4. Chris Gulden – Todd Reichert 46.97 lbs. $2,200

5. Scott Bonnema – David Hartig 45.66 lbs. $2,000

6. Jeffrey Vitali – Troy Barrett 45.27 lbs. $1,500

7. Kurt Johnson – Pat Jeffries 44.94 lbs. $1,100

8. Terry Tretsven – Tim Peterson 44.03 lbs. $1,000

9. Kerry Schlipp – Buckley Smith 42.38 lbs. $900

10. Shane Kraemer – Kurt Otto 42.17 lbs. $800

Over the weekend, Frankie’s also held its annual Kids’ Fishing Tournament at Paradise Park on Chisago Lake. Fifty-two youngsters fished from 10 am until noon on Saturday and all participants received prizes donated by area sponsors. Over 400 fish were caught during the two-hour event, and with the beautiful weather and biting fish, everyone involved with this tournament had a great time.

The Master of Ceremonies for this event was Ron Schara, who can be seen on ESPN2’s “Backroads with Ron and Raven” and “Minnesota Bound” on KARE 11.

A street dance was held in front of Frankie’s on Saturday evening to cap off the two days of tournament fishing and family fun.
