Last week at the Rum River Conference Indoor meet, the North Branch boys finished sixth while the girls placed second. All of that came despite missing several of their top athletes do to spring break.
“Spring break fell at a bad time. We had kids who were gone over spring break so they didn’t compete. That happens,” said Hasleiet, North Branch head track and field coach. “I’d say about two-thirds of our team was there but that’s okay. The team scores didn’t mean a whole lot. We still had some great individual performances. I mean, even missing some of our athletes, we still finished second in the girls and scored close to 60 points on the boys side.”
In the girls race, Jenny Anderson was present. The senior picked up where she left off from last year by winning the 55 meter hurdles and finishing fourth in the high jump.
The Vikings picked up two other firsts at the meet. Haley Hasleiet won the 3200 meter run and Shelly Oehlers won the shot put, topping 33 feet.
In addition, Miranda Charley took second in the 1600 meter run, Kacie Ramberg placed second in the 200 meter dash, and Tiffany Peterson finished third in the 3200.
The Vikings 4 X 400 relay team also finished second.
“Jenny had a good day like she always does. She won the hurdles and was fourth in the high jump. She probably jumped the best I’ve ever seen her jump,” remarked Hasleiet. “We got the Oehlers sweep with Shelly and Billy both winning the shot put. Haley won the 3200, and Miranda Charley was second in the 1600. Like I said, we had some great performances. I thought a lot of the girls picked up where they left off from last year. That’s a good sign.”
Moore leads the North Branch boys
At last Friday’s Conference Indoor meet, Al Moore put the rest of the conference on notice. The senior breezed to an early win in the 55 meter hurdles. Later in the meet, Moore did it again, this time by winning the high jump. As a matter of fact, Moore picked two of the three first place finishes for North Branch during the meet. Billy Oehlers grabbed the other one in the shot put. As a team, the Vikings finished sixth, even though they were missing several athletes from their line-up.
“Even with our guys, we almost scored 60 points,” mentioned Hasleiet. “More importantly, we wanted to come out of the meet healthy and we accomplished our goal, we didn’t get anyone hurt.”
Nick Sausen picked up the Vikings only second place finish of the day in the 800 meter run. Ryan Decorsey grabbed a fourth place spot in the pole vault.
As for the relays, the Vikings 4 X 100 relay team ran third overall, and their 4 X 200 relay team finished sixth.
Up next for the Vikings is a home meet scheduled for Tuesday followed by the St. Francis girls invite next Thursday.
