This year’s production is written and produced-directed by Chris Young, the school music and drama instructor. Young has written a music-filled play for a large cast that she calls Joseph’s Choice. In a nutshell, it’s her real-life version of how Joseph and Mary got together.
“I questioned how Joseph and Mary met....did they know each other, were they in love? Were they friends first?”
She said she wrote the lyrics to the final song in the play first. She was in her car wondering what Joseph might have thought when Mary learned she was going to have a baby. The music to this song “Why Me?” came afterwards, said Young.
For the song between Mary and her friends “I’m Going to Marry” the words were penned with much laughter on a trip to Chicago, with the help of Young’s children’s rhyming abilities.
An accident that landed Young’s father in the hospital requiring surgery and his a long recovery at-home inspired her to write one of Joseph’s songs. “While dad sat wondering why this hard time had come to him I was writing the words ...Lord what are your plans for me? I can trust you I know.”
Young says hopefully the message in the play is clear. “God can use anyone. We should be willing to be that one when He asks. God had a plan for the world and he used Mary and Joseph in a miraculous way.”
