Because the Chisago Lakes boys golf team has been soooo good over the last few years, for some teams, the expectations that go along with that type of success can be unbearable.

I’ll let you know when the Wildcats begin to show that it’s getting to them. For now, the ‘Cats just keep on winning and winning big.

Take last Wednesday for example. Facing Pine City on the road, Chisago shot 146 as a team, which is two over par. That’s as a team.

Individually, Luke Angrimson was the medalist with a 35 which was one under par. In addition, Mike Tschida shot an even par 36. As a matter of fact, five of the ‘Cats six golfers shot in the 30’s as Chisago ripped the Dragons by 54 strokes.

“Even our junior varsity beat Pine City’s varsity squad,” remarked John Hawkinson, Chisago Lakes head boys golf coach. “They are down and they play a lot of younger players but our guys were consistent and we played well. That type of consistency is what I’m looking for.”

As for the rest of the best, Trent Froberg posted a one over par 37, Josh Angrimson was two over at 38 and D.J Haus carded a 39. Jake Parenteau filled out the Wildcat scorecard with a 46.

Chisago Lakes 140

Milaca 160

Two over par against Pine City? That was nothing compared to last Thursday against Milaca. Playing at home for the first time this season, the Wildcats dominated the course by shooting a 140 as a team, putting them four under par!

After the match, the Milaca head coach Doug Reetz mentioned to Hawkinson that he believes that score is a conference record. Although there is no way to prove or deny that statement, we’ll go with it.

“Our guys aren’t going to be beat at home,” said Hawkinson. “They have been playing there ever since they were kids. On the road is a little different, but at home, we’re pretty tough.”

Mike Tschida won medalist honors with a two under par 34, followed closely by Trent Froberg and Josh Angrimson. They each finished the match with 35’s (one under par).

In addition, D.J. Haus carded a 36 and Luke Angrimson and Scott Liebsch each came in with 38’s.

The Wildcats did so well that their two 38’s (two over par) weren’t even used when it came down to factoring the team score (top four scores from each team are used).

“How about that? You can’t even used two 38’s which is a good score,” chuckled Hawkinson. “They had a 37, 39, 41 and 43, and their coach was happy with that. They played well. Our guys are just too strong at home.”

‘Cats come in third at Forest Lake Invite

When asked who finished the meet with medalist honors, John Hawkinson stated that they didn’t even stick around to find out- they were that upset with their performance.

Upset with third place? Well, when you want to be the best, you have to expect the best. Last Monday at the Forest Lake Invitational, the Wildcats were not at their best, coming in third overall, two strokes behind Forest Lake and Totino Grace.

The problem was with consistency. While one set of nine holes would be good, the second set of nine wasn’t, or at least for the ‘Cats standards. That’s the way it went for the entire Chisago team.

“We need to be consistent for all 18 holes,” commented Hawkinson. “I’m disappointed that they let that high round get too high.”

Josh Angrimson led the Wildcats with a 78. D.J. Haus also chipped in with a 78, and Luke Angrimson and Trent Froberg each posted 80’s. Mike Tschida and Scott Liebsch rounded out the line-up with an 81 and 83 respectively.

“Josh was the only player who shot even on both sides. We would have some good scores on the front nine and then things would get away from them a little bit on the back nine, or vice versa,” remarked Hawkinson. “If we factored in all six scores, nobody would be close to us. We’re deep, but we didn’t have anybody low and we didn’t have anybody high. We just needed some kids to go even lower.”

They’ll have their chance for redemption this week with two more invites. On Friday, Chisago will play at the Mora Invitational, then follow that up with the Purple Hawk Invite on Monday. The ‘Cats also have a home meet with Foley this week. That will be played on Thursday.
