Donald Krey Grant was born Jan. 11, 1921, in Minneapolis, Minn. He was the son of Ulysses S. and Hazel Krey Grant. Don grew up on the Grant family farm at Linwood Lake. He was active in the local 4-H club, attended Anoka High School, and graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Agriculture. April 30, 1942, he married Ruth LaPlant, of Elk River, Minn.
World War II cut short his planned career of farming. Don joined the Navy and saw service in the European Theater where he was wounded on D-Day. His war injuries prevented him from returning to farm work, so he began a new career of serving his country when he was appointed postmaster in Wyoming in 1945.
Don served his community in several different ways. He served on the Fair Board in the 1950s and 1960s, Wyoming School Board and was a member of the Wyoming Volunteer Fire Department for 27 years, chief for eight years. Don was on the Wyoming Village Council, secretary of the Chisago County Fair Board, a member of the Wyoming Methodist Church Board, and an active advocate of the Boy Scout program, serving at both the troop and District level. He was elected to serve on the Chisago Lakes Hospital Board and was on the Selective Service Board.
After 28 years as Postmaster in Wyoming, Don became the Postmaster in Forest Lake, retiring from this position in 1977. In later years, Don served as President of the State Chapter of the Retired Postmasters.
In 1971, Don and Ruth moved from Wyoming to Linwood Lake. In 1973, Don was elected to the Linwood Town Board and served 10 years with a term as the chairman. He continued to be active in Anoka County, serving on two county boards. He was also on the Northern National Bank Board in Forest Lake.
After retirement from the post office, Don pursued a career in real estate.
He was a Mason and member of the Osman Shrine, VFW and American Legion.
In addition to his varied civic activities, Don was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with family and friends in numerous locations in Canada, Minnesota and the state of Wyoming. Don and Ruth loved traveling and camping over the years and exploring the country in their motor home. Don’s lawn and garden were always his pride and joy.
Don and Ruth raised three children and are proud grandparents of nine grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. Don was never happier than when all the family gathered at Linwood Lake.
Don is preceded in death by his parents, Ulie and Hazel, and his sister, Margaret Nordin.
He will be deeply missed by his wife of 63 years, Ruth; and children: Merrie and Harvey (Glowaski), John and Donna, Allan and Diane; grandchildren: Michael (Kirsten) Glowaski, Julie (Rich) Lee, Gabrielle (Cara Pederson) Grant, Danielle (Bryce Miller) Grant, Steve (Stacy) Grant, Johnny (Heather) Grant, Michelle (Trevor Rokusek) Grant, Jimmy (Lori) Grant and Brian (Sara) Grant; great-grandchildren: Josh and Madelyn Lee; Joe, Kaitlyn, Kourtney and Kiley Glowaski; Noah and Taylor Grant; and Emma and Ike Pederson.
