Chisago Lakes grapplers start season with 5 matches, 4 at Chisago Invite
The Chisago Lakes Wildcat wrestlers were living on the edge as they used three pins in the last 20 seconds of three matches to propel them to a 39-35 victory over the Totino Grace Eagles. The Wildcats defeated the number 10 rated Eagles in the first dual meet of the 2005-2006 season Friday, December 2 at Totino Grace.
Jacob Bowersox (103) and Mike Michaelson (119) pinned their opponents to give the Wildcats an early 12-6 lead. After two losses, Brian Jones (135) pulled the Wildcats back to 15-17. With the Wildcats trailing 15-20, the last-second pins and other important pins started coming.
Bobby Ferrier (145) pinned his opponent with just six seconds left in his match to put the Wildcats up 21-20. Three matches later, with the Wildcats trailing 21-29, Chad Stenson (171) pinned his opponent with just 19 seconds left in his match. At 189, sophomore Troy Montague pinned his opponent to give the Wildcats a 33-29 lead.
Jason Schumann (215), wrestling in only his second varsity match, came up with the most dramatic victory of the day for the Wildcats. Schumann and his opponent battled to a tie in regulation and it looked like they were going to be tied after overtime, too. But, with just one-tenth of a second left in overtime, Schumann pinned his opponent to give the Wildcats a 39-29 lead and guarantee the victory. After the Wildcats lost the heavyweight match, the final score was Chisago Lakes 39, Totino Grace 35.
“That one was a lot of fun,” Wildcat head coach Shawn Frederixon said. “Totino Grace lost a lot of seniors, but they always have plenty of quality wrestlers. Our guys have matured into a good group. We have a good core in the middle of our lineup. We got a couple wins from the bottom weights, the middle got us going and we were able to finish from there. We had a lot of guys step up.
“We seemed to have as many fans at the match as they did, so the crowd helped us. And the kids were excited to win because the last time we wrestled Totino Grace, five year ago, we lost 73-0. Brian Jones wrestled as an 8th grader then and is a senior this year. So I think the victory was especially nice for him.
Chisago Lakes Duals
The Wildcats hosted the Chisago Lakes Duals Saturday, December 3 and came away with a 1-3 record for the day. Brian Jones and Bobby Ferrier were Chisago Lakes Duals Champions. They both went 4-0 for the day. Jones and Ferrier are both undefeated at 5-0 this season.
Forest Lake 65, Chisago Lakes 9
“Forest Lake is a quality team,” Frederixon said. “They’re loaded with juniors and seniors and are one of the top three teams in our section.”
Chisago Lakes 39, Somerset 35
In the win over Somerset, seventh-grader Travis Kammerer, losing 5-0 in the second period, reversed and pinned his opponent for the victory in his first varsity match. Sophomore Troy Montague went up against a senior and found himself trailing 4-1 near the end of the first period. Montague put the kid in a headlock, threw him and pinned him, with two seconds left, for the win.
Blaine 39, Chisago Lakes 36
“We had a huge comeback against Blaine,” Frederixon said. “We were down 27-0 before Brian Jones started the comeback with a pin at 135. We then won six of the next seven matches. After Troy Montague won his 215-pound match, we were up 36-33. Even though we ended up losing after the heavyweight match, this showed that, if teams don’t match up with us well in the middle, we can be really tough on them. We really showed some heart in this match.”
Kenyon-Wannamingo45, CL21
“Against Kenyon Wannamingo, we just ran out of gas,” Frederixon said. “It was our fifth match of the weekend, and the kids were emotionally drained. Even so, we stayed right there with them through the middle of the match. They won a couple of close ones to put it away.
“Overall, Saturday’s matches were a positive experience for us. We’ll have rest a few bumps and bruises and get ready for next week,” Frederixon concluded.
The Wildcats will wrestle in an individual tournament this Saturday, December 10 at 10 a.m. in Prior Lake. They’ll visit conference opponent Spring Lake Park for a dual meet next Tuesday, December 13.
