The Chisago Lakes/Pine City Wildcats girls’ hockey team improved its conference record to 3-1-0 with a 5-1 win over the St. Louis Park Orioles Tuesday, December 6 at Chisago Lakes Arena.
Annie Fredrickson scored her fifth goal in three games, assisted by Ariel Novak and Morgan Baumgard, to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead after one period. Amanda Waltz scored on an end-to-end breakaway to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead just over a minute into the second period. The Orioles weren’t ready to go away just yet, putting one in the net to pull within one with just under a minute left in the period.
The Wildcats scored two goals, a minute apart, midway through the third period to put the game away. Rhiannon Sauter’s goal at 6:06, assisted by Novak, made the score 3-1. At 7:08, Lexy Parenteau scored on an end-to-end rush to give the Wildcats a 4-1 lead. Parenteau added another similar goal at the 15-minute mark to make the final score Chisago Lakes 5, St. Louis Park 1.
Chisago Lakes/Pine City 4, Mahtomedi 1
Led by two goals from forward Rhiannon Sauter, the Wildcats beat the Mahtomedi Zephyrs 4-1 Friday, December 9 at Chisago Lakes Arena.
Though the Wildcats dominated play throughout the game, they weren’t able to get on the board until Sauter’s goal midway through the second period. Sauter was assisted by Lexy Parenteau and Amanda Waltz.
When the Zephyrs scored a power play goal four minutes into the third period to tie it up, it seemed to wake up the Wildcat offense. Just one minute after the Zephyr goal, Abby Olson scored her first goal of the season, assisted by Krista Liebsch. It was only Liebsch’s second time on the ice as a varsity forward.
At the 10:45 mark, Sam Lorr scored her first goal of the season, assisted by Rachel Miles, to give the Wildcats a little breathing room. With less than a minute remaining, Rhiannon Sauter put an exclamation point on the victory with her second goal of the game, an empty netter. That made the final score Chisago Lakes 4, Mahtomedi 1.
“Jackie played another good game for us,” said Wildcat head coach Al Magnuson, referring to senior goaltender Jackie Weiden. “And I was glad to see some new faces – Abby Olson, Sam Lorr, Rachel Miles and Krista Liebsch – get in on the scoring.
“Our success the last few years has given us the opportunity to schedule more games against top-tier opponents,” said Magnuson. “Playing games against the top teams in the state will help us better prepare for the section tournament. And our season is going well, so far. Our only two losses are to the numbers three and four Class AA teams in the state, North St. Paul and Benilde-St. Margaret’s.”
