Chisago Lakes started strong by winning event one, the 400 medley relay. The team, John Donohue, Tom McGurk, Luke Spehar and Hunter Heggerston, turned in a time of 4:13. 29. Irondale was second, 4.7 seconds slower than the Wildcats.
Cameron Novak, Joey Swanson, Kevin Roggeman and Spehar won the 200 butterfly relay in 1:53.51. That time put them almost 10 seconds ahead of second place Columbia Heights.
The 200 freestyle relay team won its event in 1:40.32. Steve Boo, Swanson, Dave Willhite and Heggerston completed the distance more than five seconds ahead of runnerup Irondale.
Irondale finished the 200 breaststroke relay in 2:18.30. However, that wasn’t good enough as the Wildcat team (Willhite, Tyler Schuler, Mark Eagan and McGurk) took first in 2:14.29.
The Wildcat divers also competed and took first place, but the points were not included in the team scores. All three divers, Willhite, Charlie Kopp and Tom McCulloch had personal best scores, so things look good for the new season.
Wildcat head coach Jim Sauerbry was enthused about the team’s fast start. “Each swimmer in the first relay just about matched their end-of -season times from last year. That theme continued throughout the meet,” the coach explained. “One big mistake, a DQ in the IM relay relay, kept us from winning the meet.”
The swimmers and divers next event is at Cambridge-Isanti, Thursday, December 15 at 6 p.m.
