Wildcats pick up five wins in five days including a second place finish at Hibbing
Last Tuesday, Chisago welcomed Foley, Patrick Henry, and Fridley to town to kick off the week. In the first match of the night against Foley, the Wildcats fell behind early to the Falcons who are once again one of the top programs in the state. Trailing 41-3, Luke Anderson gave the Wildcats something to cheer about when he pinned Kyle Henry, the #9 ranked wrestler in the state. Adam Gemuenden then followed that up with a pin at 189 pounds, making the score 41-15. Even though Chisago lost the match 53-15, their late surge gave Frederixon and his troops something to build on.
And in the second match of the night against Patrick Henry, they used that momentum to jump on Henry midway through the match and never looked back. Tied 12-12 at 130 pounds, John Hogie’s pin of Eric Thor started a string of pins for the ‘Cats. The next seven matches were won by Chisago, all by pins, turning the match into a blowout. Even with Henry winning at 215 on a forfeit, the Wildcats still managed to win 60-18.
“We came out fired up. I think we overwhelmed them and we took it to them,” said Frederixon, Chisago Lakes head wrestling coach. “Starting at 130 pounds, that’s probably the heart of our line-up. We just go. If we’re going to beat teams, that’s usually the way it happens.”
In the third match of the night against Fridley, the middle of the Wildcats line-up was solid once again, but this time, it was the start of their line-up that got things going. After Mike Michaelson opened up with a 12-5 win, back-to-back pins by Adam Bettcher and Brian Jones pushed the Chisago lead to 15-0. Fridley got one back at 125 pounds, but the ‘Cats won seven of the next eight matches, jumping in front 52-12. Fridley finished the scoring by grabbing 12 more points but the damage was already done.
“Mike got us started and then Adam got a pin for us and it just seemed like after that things went our way,” mentioned Frederixon.
Wildcats second at Hibbing Invite
Last Friday, Chisago Lakes took part in the first round of the Hibbing Tournament, picking up another win, this over Nashwauk-Keewatin.
Once again, the ‘Cats made their presence known right away by winning the first six matches, giving them an early 27-0 lead. After a loss at 140 pounds, Dan Gemuenden got Chisago back on track with a pin at 145 pounds. From there, Chad Stenson and Luke Anderson slammed the door on Nashwauk by grabbing wins at 160 and 171 pounds respectively. It was all the Wildcats needed en route to a 43-25 victory.
“We got a nice cushion. They did a nice job right away,” replied Frederixon. “Their wrestler at 140 pounds is probably their best but by the time they got to him the match was pretty much over.”
Things weren’t as easy against Hibbing last Saturday in the second round of the tournament. This time the match went down to the wire. The Bluejackets actually started with the lead, building themselves a 16-9 cushion before the ‘Cats charged back. At 140 pounds, Bobby Ferrier picked up a tech. fall win, pulling Chisago within two. Next up was Dan Gemuenden who gave the Wildcats their first lead since the very first match as he won by decision. Leading 17-16, after a win by Mike Welle, Hibbing charged back, re-taking the lead after wins at 160 and 171 pounds, making the score 25-20 in favor of the Bluejackets. Considering that Chisago didn’t have anyone wrestling at 275 pounds, the hopes for a Wildcat win came down to Anderson at 189 pounds and Adam Gemuenden at 215.
Anderson was up to the challenge. The senior took just 3:30 to wrap up Matt Anderson of Hibbing, picking up his second pin of the tourney. More importantly, it gave Chisago a 26-25 lead.
It all came down to Gemuenden. The question of whether or not he’d be up to the challenge was answered one minute into the match as he wrestled Kyle Hamilton to the ground, grabbing a pin and clinching a Chisago win. Game over. The final, Chisago Lakes 32, Hibbing 31.
“That was one of the most exciting matches I’ve been apart of,” said Frederixon. “We knew we needed those last two pins and they got them. We just took care of business.”
However, in the third round of the tournament against White Bear Lake, they did not as the Bears snapped the Wildcats four match winning streak with a 58-12 win. Brian Jones turned in the ‘Cats best performance against White Bear by defeating Brian Theroux at 119 pounds. Theroux was rated in the top five at 119 pounds in class “AA”. In addition, Hogie and Anderson also picked up wins for the ‘Cats who lost five matches due to forfeits.
As disappointed as the ‘Cats were with their loss to White Bear, they were still in the hunt for second place, and against Highland Park in the final match of the day, Chisago wrapped up that spot with a 44-29 victory.
Once again, the top of the line-up was solid, winning the first three matches, giving the Wildcats a 15-0 lead. That includes a win by Jones at 119 pounds, his fourth of the tournament. However, Highland Park fought back, taking the lead with a win at 140 pounds, giving them a 17-15 advantage.
Three matches later, tied 20-20, the heart of the Wildcats line-up made their move. First at 152 pounds, Welle picked up a pin followed by six more points at 171 pounds, spotting Chisago a 32-23 lead. Next up was Anderson who picked up his fourth win of the tournament, all four were pins, moving the score to 38-23. Adam Gemuenden closed things out for Chisago with a forfeit win at 215 pounds, helping the Wildcats to a 44-29 win and a second place trophy.
“All of a sudden we just kicked it into gear,” said Frederixon. “Once we hit 152 pounds, the kids just dominated. It was a great tournament for us. We built some momentum, even going back to the start of the week going 5-2 over that stretch. Now we have to keep it going.”
That’s because another tough tournament is on the way. On Saturday, the Wildcats will travel to Centennial to take part in the Centennial Invite.
