LaVern had been receiving dialysis treatments. Her nurse Mark Goelti, from Davita of Forest Lake, corresponds with a staff sergeant stationed in Iraq. The exchange of letters included stories about how much kids in Iraq needed and appreciated toys occasionally provided by the troops.
The idea was born. The quilt club members would make cloth dolls and bears and send them to Iraq.
Vicki McNally, Lindstrom, asked the Vacation Bible School children of St. Bridget’s Church, in Lindstrom, if they would like to donate toys. The two groups collected three huge bags of toys. The Davita Dialysis Team, of Forest Lake, volunteered to pay shipping and the toys are on the way for distribution by US soldiers to needy kids.
LaVern died July 1. The pastor at Faith Lutheran Church, in Forest Lake, eulogized her latest charitable endeavor––toys for Iraq children, and how proud she was of the success of the project.
In past years, Memorial Quilters have made a number of other such efforts. Last year, they had a group sew-in and made over 150 blue jean tote bags for wheelchairs and walkers at Birchwood Health Care Center, in Forest Lake. “Welcome quilts” were made and donated to the first babies of the year to the hospital auxiliary for auctions and raffles. The club makes 50 burp bibs a month for the new babies and layettes for Angel Babies born at the Fairview Regional Health Care Center. Members donate fabric to make “comfort quilts” for area people in need.
The group meets monthly from 7-8:30 p.m. on the third Thursday of the month in the Forest Lake Senior Center, located on 4th Street. New members are invited to join the club. The next meeting will be Thursday, July 21. Their biannual quilt show will be April 21-22, 2006, in Maranatha Church, in Forest Lake.
