You know things are going good when one of your golfers shoots a 37 and you don’t even use it.

John Hawkinson just smiles.

“It’s amazing. It kind of makes you feel bad in a way,” said Hawkinson, Chisago Lakes head boys golf coach.

It just shows you how good this team really is. Last Friday versus Princeton, four ‘Cats shot a 36 or lower meaning Scott Liebsch’s 37 didn’t factor into the Wildcats final team score of 139. In addition, D.J. Haus posted a 39 (three over par). That too was left off the final scoreboard.

As for the scores Hawkinson did use, Luke Angrimson continued his hot play by shooting a 33, putting him three under par. It was the best round of the day.

In addition, Mike Tschida followed with a 34 and Trent Froberg and Josh Angrimson each shot 36’s. The end result was a convincing 22 stroke win over the Tigers, 139-161. As a team, Chisago Lakes finished five under par.

“I got it at home, I just need it on the road,” mentioned Hawkinson, referring to the ‘Cats balance. “I think we’re back on track after losing last week (to Mora). We had a practice run in Hinckley (the course the section tourney is played on) and we shot a 305 as a team, which is right where we should be. I’d like to get below the 300 mark. If one person shoots low during each round (of the section tournament), I think that will equate to a score below 300. If that happens, we’ll be in good shape.”

No question, they’re in good shape right now. Chisago hopes to keep it that way with St. Michael and North Branch on the way this week.
