Foley uses home course advantage to defeat Lady Viking golfers
North Branch 208
Dave Ambers knew it couldn’t last forever, he just hoped it would.
Playing at Foley last Wednesday, the North Branch girls golf team lost for the first time this season, 204-208.
Although the skies were sunny, the weather was on the chilly side. That paired with the Falcons home course advantage led to an inconsistent round by the Vikings. While several holes were good, others weren’t. It hurt their score just enough.
“Foley worked their home course advantage into a win,” said Dave Ambers, North Branch head girls golf coach. “Once again, some big holes caused us trouble. Most of the girls are playing pretty good golf for six or seven holes. However, we need to play all nine to win those close matches.”
Lacee Scherer led the Vikings with a 51, followed by 51’s by Hope Chenevert and Amy Aho. That was a career high for Chenevert. Katie Foley, a newcomer at the varsity level, finished with a 56.
“The highlights for the team are the continued improvement of Katie, and we’re all excited for Hope’s new all-time best,” added Ambers.

The Milaca Girls Golf Invite offered a sneak peak into the upcoming conference tournament, and Milaca looks to be the cream of the conference crop while Chisago Lakes, North Branch, and others will battle it out for second.
The Wolves won the meet with ease, scoring a 372 for the day. Princeton was the closest team to the Wolves, posting a team score of 412. The Vikings then followed the Tigers, finishing third at the meet with a 422. Chisago Lakes fell sixth.
Individually, Lacee Scherer finished third as well, carding a 93 for the round. Scherer followed Milaca’s Lacey Hoeck and Erin Rice who each shot a 90 or below. Hoeck was the medalist, shooting an 87.
“Lacee has all the tools to be a very successful golfer and her confidence level continues to grow,” mentioned Dave Ambers, North Branch head girls golf coach.
As for the rest of the Viking line-up, Amy Aho and Kelsey Johnson each shot a 105, Jeni Farr carded a 119 and Kelsey Perreault added a 123.
“Obviously, Milaca is the best team in our conference, but we feel we have the ability to compete with anyone else in the Rum River,” remarked Ambers. We’ll find out next week when we play at Princeton and host Milaca.”
Meanwhile, Chisago Lakes fell 17 strokes behind North Branch, finishing sixth overall. Playing with a very inexperienced line-up, Megan Corradi finished with the Wildcats top score, posting a 103 for the day. In addition, Krista Swanson fell below the 110 mark with a 109. Because it was a Thursday afternoon meet, the ‘Cats played with only two of their usual six varsity golfers.
After Swanson, Melissa Ubel finished with a 111, Ellen Watters shot a 116 and Erika Blegen also walked the course for the Wildcats, finishing with a 141.
