North Branch-Chisago Lakes cross country teams square off
The North Branch boys won the event with a score of 18. Chisago had 45 and MSA 100. The scores in the girls’ varsity race were North Branch 18, MSA 77 and the Chisago Lakes did not have a complete team.
In the 5K event, Viking Nick Ramberg and Wildcat Zach Hunter were very close for the first two kilometers. Ramberg gradually pulled away as the runners approached the second lap of the grueling race.
The girls race was dominated by eighth graders. Viking Haley Hasleiet led the field from start to finish. As usual, teammate Miranda Charley was on her heels the whole race. Wildcat Danielle Vitali was third in the girls 4K event.
The race course starts and ends on the flat softball/soccer field portion of the park. However, it also features true cross country running as it winds its way through the hilly and wooded hiking/cross country ski trails in the east and south sections of Ki-Chi-Saga.
The top finishers in the boys’ race for Chisago Lakes were Hunter (2/17:49), Andrew Turner (8/18:39), Nathan Gieske (10/18:59), Matt Jorgenson (12/19:16) and Geoff Wickens (13/19;29). Also running for the Wildcats were Tom McGurk, Charlie Kopp, Matt Lundquist, Zach Johnson, Greg Olmschenk and Tony Olmschenk.
For the Vikings, Ramberg (1/17:00), JJ Koerber (3/17:53), Ryan Norman (4/17:58), Brandon Nagle (5/18:13) and Cody Good (6/18:28) accounted for the team’s total of 19. Cory Crowell, Aaron Cedergren, Boyd Suparat, Ben Meemken, Zach Good, Nick Salo and Ben Prager also ran.
The winning North Branch girls’ team was paced by Hasleiet (1/16:07), Charley (2/16;12), Ali Zimmerman (4/17:06), Tiffany Peterson (5/17:26) and Shayna Gray (6/17:34). Briana Berthiaume, Erica Handt, Bonnie Haslach, Dani Privratsky, Laura Backus, Taylaur Biebel, Janie Morgan, Gretchen Ziegler and Kayla Kirchoff ran also ran for the Vikings.
For the Wildcat girls, Vitali’s 16:32 earned her third place. Other Chisago Lakes runners were Becca Schmidt (9/18:15), Chelsea Johnson (12/19:15) and Makayla Grote (15/19:14).
