State tax rebates? Must be an election year

Easter is my most dreaded holiday of the year. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the meaning of Easter, but it’s all the candy that comes with the celebration. If you know me, you know that I have lost some weight over the last year, plus. But, every year the big bunny comes along and leaves hoards of candy laying around. Now I can deal with one day’s worth of candy, but when there is candy sitting there staring me in the face all the time it gets kind of difficult. What I need is a holiday where you give vegetables instead of candy. I won’t hold my breath on that one. Seriously, have a wonderful Easter and make sure you spend it with your loved ones.

If you have young children, this Saturday is just your ticket. Zion Lutheran Church, in Chisago City, is holding an Easter Egg Hunt for children. Families are encouraged to bring their own baskets for collecting eggs. There will be many other activities for children and families to take part in. The hunt begins at 9 a.m. sharp.

We here at the Press would like to wish Jim Molnar all the best and hope that he gets better soon. Jim, if you don’t know, has been a huge part of the community his entire life. Jim and his wife Daphne used to run the Rainbow Cafe (which is now Saddlebags) for years and years.

In this edition of the Chisago County Press you will find our annual Spring Sports Preview. Our sports editor Dave Ambers, along with the help of Chuck Fitzer, have compiled articles and photos of your local high schools’ teams. Dave has been a wonderful edition to the staff here at the Press and I think it reflects in our paper. If you did not receive the preview for some reason, you may come into the Press and pick one up.

Have you heard that the state is now wanting to give homeowners a rebate check for $205. I guess they feel guilty about raking us over the coals for the last 25 years. My question is this––instead of giving us these rebates (don’t get me wrong, there is no going back now), why didn’t the state spend the overages on important issues involving the state. What about cuts that have been made to our schools? What about cuts that have been made to our cities? Roads? I could keep going and going. I guess what I am getting at is––why not appropriate these funds before you shoot your mouth off about rebates. I can only think of one reason.......election time?
