Al Magnuson presided over his final awards banquet as head coach for the Chisago Lakes Wildcat girls hockey team a couple of weeks ago. But Magnuson looked toward the future even as he talked about the success his team had this past season.

“You’ll probably see me around the arena next year. I may show up to see how the team is doing. Also, I may get back into coaching Mites – I have a young relative or two who are just at the age to start thinking about playing hockey.”

“One of my last official acts as head coach was to name the award for the hardest worker the Annie Fredrickson Award. Annie won the award the last four years in a row, and I could think of no better tribute to someone who works as hard as Annie than to name the award after her.”

“We had a good season,” said Magnuson, “having made it to the semifinals of the section playoffs.” And we had a strong senior class, including Frederickson, Lexy Parenteau, Amanda Waltz, Jackie Weiden, Jenny Wolfe and Alicia Wasson. As happens every year, next year’s team will miss the graduating seniors. But it will be time for Rhiannon Sauter and Morgan Baumgard, as seniors, to lead the team next season.”

“Erica Pitzen, who will be a junior next season, should be fine in the nets as she takes over for our MVP, Jackie Weiden. And new head coach Jason Mahlen will do a great job running the team. He’s been with me as an assistant for five years, and he will have a good nucleus of players coming back. I think the team will be strong next year. That’s how I wanted to go out. My goal has always been to have kids want to come back to play and to be proud to be Wildcat players.”

Magnuson was clearly proud of Lexy Parenteau’s selection to the all-state honorable mention team by Let’s Play Hockey magazine. “Only six defenseman got honorable mention all-state,” said Magnuson. Parenteau, who will attend Bemidji State this fall on a hockey scholarship, traveled to Buffalo with the Wisconsin Wild this past weekend to participate in the 2005 USA Hockey Girls National Championship. Parenteau’s team had to win four games in a row at a state tournament in order to represent Wisconsin at the national tournament.
